Bristish rationale: The british wanted to enforce the neglected mollases act and needed more money for war
Colonail reaction: No right for taxation without representaion -
Currency act
British rationale: The british didnt like colonial money so they enforced there own common currency
Colonial Reaction: AMericans fear these acts would cause a debt -
Stamp Act
British rationale: British is in debt from 7 years war and colonists should pay there share of the debt
Colonist reaction: Colonists want seats in parlimenet and they hate Taxation without representaion -
Repeal of the stamp act and passage of Declaratory act
British rationale: withdrew a tax, but kept the control adn supremecy
Colonists reaction: Fprced a tax withdra, but overlooked bad aspects of the act -
Townshend duties
British rationale: British had the right to tax, used indirect taxes
Colonial reaction: Believed that the taxes were collected for revenue -
Tea Act
British rationale: The east india company loved the tea price for transportaion cost,
Colonial reaction: Taxation without representaion -
Coercive or "Intolerable" Acts
British Rationale- These acts were passed to primarily in response to the Boston Tea Party. There were 4 acts that passed during this time period. Colonial Reaction- Colonists unjustified the denial of liberty. -
Quatering act
British rationale: British needed a place for the soldiers protecting the colonist.
Colonist reactions: Colonists hated these acts and how the soldiers treated them. did not want to follow these acts. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
This was the first of the events that begun the war for independence.
British Rationale- They went to try preventing rebellion, but found out about the Colonists gun powder at concord. They attack.
Colonists reaction- The attacks lead to a 2nd continental congress meeting, and the colonists win, rallying the cause of the war of independence. -
Second Continental Congress
Location- Philadelphia
Significance- They proposed the Olive Branch Petition as a one last try to maintain peace.
Result- George Washington became the leader of the army.
Effect- They eventually drafted the Declaration of Independence, and people supported the cause. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
Location- The American Outpost, very close to Boston.
Significance- This battle was a significant shift of confidence in the Americans, although the British won.
Result- It boosted the confidence of the American army.
Effect- The British begin to realize the Americans will not be defeated easily. -
Declaration of Independence
Location- Philadelphia
Significance- It granted Independence from Britain.
Result- America became its own nation. All thee colonies were now called states.
Effect- America now has freedom to govern its own people and make their own decisions. -
Battle of Saratoga
Location- Saratoga, New York
Significance- It proved to the French that the revolution was a worthy cause.
Result- The French began to support the Americans in the war.
Effect- The French support gave Americans supplies required for the war. -
Battle of Yorktown
Location- Yorktown, Virginia
Significance- This was the last battle of the war for Independence.
Result- Cornwallis surrendered.
Effect- The British began peace talks. -
Treaty of Paris
Location- Paris, France
Significance- The treaty officially ended the war.
Result- America was recognized as an independent nation.
Effect- It ended the war.
