Magna Carta
It is a charter that was signed by King John after he was pursued by 40 rebellious barrons. This document pretected the people from tyrannical rulers. -
Petition of Right
This is another set of liberties made my colonists. It lists specific subjects that the king is not able to infringe. -
English Bill of Rights
This limited the power of the English sovereign. It came before the constitution. -
Albany Plan of Union
This suggested that our government be unified for the colonies. It was proposed by Ben Franklin, a delegate from Pennsylvania. -
Boston Massacre
British regulars killed five colonists after there was contreversy about the tax issues in the colonies. The troops first appeared in 1768 to enforce the tax laws -
Boston Tea Party
Many colonists protested 13 years of oppression from the British. They attacked their merchant ships at the harbor; this later resulted in harsher punishment. -
First Continental Congress
12 out of the 13 colonies met during the American Revolution. This meeting lasted for almost 2 months in Philidelphia -
Second Continental Congress
A second meeting among the delegates occured then. It was just after the warfare of the Revolution. -
Declaration of Independence
On July the 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted. It states our natural rights and other privliges and was signed by over 50 colonists who worked towards our freedom. -
Articles of Confederation
This was the first constitution of the United States. It was adopted by Continental Congress in 1777. -
Shay's rebellion
Many farmers rebelled against the harsh taxes they were forced to pay.There was a series of protests that lasted until 1787. -
New Jersey Plan
It was a suggestion for the structure of our nation's government. This is also known as the Small State Plan. -
Philidelphia Convention
The people wanted to change the articles of confederation. 55 delegates were sent to discuss the desire of wanting states to have individual laws. -
Virginia Plan
It was a proposal for a bicameral legislative branch. This is so that Congress would be split into two houses- the senate, and the state representatives.
