The French and Indian War
This war was fought by the French against the British, both with their Native American allies. It was also known as the Seven Years' War, even though it lasted 9 years. This war started over disputes of who should own the Ohio River Valley. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763. The French lost all their land to the British. -
The Proclamation of 1763
A proclamation created by King George lll that ended the Seven Years War. It made the French lose all their land in America. It also restricted the colonists from colonizing themselves west of the Appalachian mountains.It gave the Natives all the land in the west. The land in between the Natives and the British colonies was occupied by the Spanish. -
Taxes
The American colonists had to pay taxes to the British government. Most of these taxes were created due to the war debt after the Seven Years' War. Others were created due to the Boston Tea Party. This included the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Navigation Act etc. The most notorious set of laws/taxes that were created after the Boston Tea Party were the Intolerable Acts. -
Sugar Act
The Sugar Act was passed down by British Parliament. It was also called the Plantation and Revenue Act. It's purpose was to halt the trade of smuggled sugar and molasses between the colonists, French, and the Dutch West Indies. It was also to raise revenue through colonial customs. The sugar act was the first tax on the American colonists. -
Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre started off as a colonist taunting and yelling at a British soldier. Eventually, things escalated quickly to where there was an entire crowd and a squad of British soldiers yelling at each other. The soldiers then fired into the crowd, killing 5 people. This event helped a great deal to contribute to the beginning of the American Revolution. -
The Boston Tea Party
This event took place in Massachusetts. It was caused by the Tea Act passed down by British Parliament. The Sons of Liberty (colonists) dressed up as Natives and boarded and English tea ship. They threw about 340 crates of tea into the Boston Harbor. Their actions caused the passing down of the Intolerable Acts. -
Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts were passed by the British Parliament and King George lll. It was passed down after they received the news of the Boston Tea Party. They were laws intended to punish the colonists. One of those laws was the British Port Bill, where they shut down Boston Harbor. -
Boston Blockade
The Boston blockade was designed to punish the inhabitants of Boston. This event occurred after the Boston Tea Party, where colonists dumped more than 300 crates of Tea into Boston Harbor. The Boston Blockade is also known as the Port Act. This action was passed down by the British Parliament. It was also part of the Intolerable Acts. -
Continental Congress
American delegates from the colonies met to discuss their grievances toward the British. This event was founded by the House of Burgesses. It was founded in June 14, 1775. There were two separate Continental congresses that were organized. John Hancock was elected president for the second continental congress. -
Declaration Of Independence
This document was written mostly by Thomas Jefferson. It was the official document of American separation from Britain. It was written in the Second Continental Congress. Others that were involved were Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Roger Sherman. It's now located in the National Archives and Records.
