The French and Indian War
The French and Indian War was also known as the 7 years war. It was fought between France and Britain about land in the Americas. Britain ended up winning. -
The Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 prohibited colonist from crossing the Appalachian mountains. This prevented the colonist from expanding out of the areas they were already in. Many colonist were angry with this because they fought and died in the French and Indian War and yet they couldn't go to the land they had just won. -
Sugar Act
The sugar act was also called the plantation act, and it was enacted to combat sugar smuggling into the colonies. The British did this by reducing the previous tax rate but enforcing the collection of those taxes. -
Currency Act
The currency act made the Sterling Pound the official currency of the colonies. This was done so merchants were not paid in outdated money. But it created a shortage of British Money. -
The Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre was an event where British soldiers shot and killed a couple colonist while they were being harassed by a mob. The British soldiers were having rocks thrown at them. They were also outnumbered. -
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was a protest by colonist. They protested by dumping crates of tea off of British ships. they wanted to protest because of the tax on tea. -
Intolerable Acts
The intolerable acts were a set of laws meant to punish the colonist. One of the laws was one that closed Boston Harbor. This severely hurt Bostons economy. -
Boston Blockade
The Boston Blockade was also known as the Boston port act. It was enacted to punish the people of Boston for the Boston Tea Party. During the blockade only food and firewood was allowed through the port. -
Continental Congress
The Continental Congress was composed of representatives from the 13 colonies. Some of the notable members are Ben Franklin and George Washington. The purpose of this committee was to determine if independence from Britain was wanted. -
The Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence officially declared the colonies independence from Britain. The document also explained why the colonies wanted independence. It was signed by 56 delegates to the second continental congress.
