Navigation Act
British act to restrict trade in the English colonies. Meant to keep the colonies under Britain’s firm rule so they would keep making them money. -
French and Indian War Ends
Britain gained all of French Canadian land. -
Stamp Act
Taxed things like newspapers and pamphlets. Colonists took it as an attack on their fights, though it was not particularly cumbersome. -
Boston Massacre
British soldiers killed 5 colonists. People across the colonies were outraged, and resentment grew. -
Boston Tea Party
British tea was dumped from a ship into the Boston harbor. When Britain harshly punished Massachusetts, the first Continental Congress was held by colonists to discuss how to handle it. -
Coercive/Intolerable Acts
The series of acts that Britain took to punish Massachusetts for the Boston Tea Party. Colonist’s fury grew with these acts. -
Lexington and Concord
Colonists fought with British troops. The first shots of the American revolution were fired. This would lead to the second continental congress. -
Second Continental Congress
Met and set up the continental army. -
Declaration of Independence Adopted
Declared independence from Britain. Set up much of the foundation for American government and guaranteed all people the right to life, liberty, and happiness. Had many enlightenment influences. -
Winter at Valley Forge
American troops suffer through hunger, disease, and the cold. The army was held together by George Washington. Event lasted from 1777 to 1778. -
Battle of Saratoga
First turning point in the American Revolution. Persuaded the French to side with the Americans, which gave them access to more supplies. -
Battle of Yorktown
The American army forced the surrender of the British army. British war efforts crumbled after. -
U.S Constitution written
Created a Federal Republic. Divided power up between three branches of government and created checks and balances. -
U.S Constitution Adopted
Guaranteed the rights of U.S citizens. Set up an official way of government that had checks and balances to keep each one in check. Put forth the idea that certain rights belong to anyone.
