  • Navigation Acts

    Navigation Acts
    On October 9th, 1651 the English Parliament passed its Navigation Acts. The Navigation Acts were put in place to tighten the governments control over trade. Colonist did not like this because it imited their trade with nations other than England. The Navigation Acts is an example of mercantilism, which is the belief in the benefits of profitable trading.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    On April 5th, 1754 Parliment passed the Sugar Act. They passed this to reduce the rate of tax on molasses, establish British admiralty courts for tax violators, regulate trade, etc.
    The colonists were angry about the sugar act because of the fact that it added more taxes for them to pay.
    The Sugar Act is an example of government control. The government back then could basically do whatever they wanted to even if the colonists hated it.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    At the end of the French and Indian War the British issued a proclamation to please the Indians by managing the invasion of settlers on their lands.
    The colonists did not appreciate the Proclamation of 1763 because it prevented them from owning more land.
    This is an example of being nice because the government helped the Natives keep their land.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament on March 22, 1765. The new tax was given to all American colonists and required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used.
    The colonists were mad about it and resisted the act by debating about it and sometimes tarring and feathering tax collectors.
    This is an example of violence or public humiliation because of wht they did to the tax collectors.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    The Quartering Act was passed to force local colonial governments to provide provisions and housing to British soldiers stationed in the 13 Colonies of America.
    The colonists reaction was negative and they did not want any troops or strangers in their homes.
    This is an example of how powerful the government is because the colonists cant refuse.
  • Townshend Acts

    Townshend Acts
    The Townshend Acts put taxes on glass, lead, paints, paper and tea imported into the colonies.
    The colonists were angry about this act and tried to resist the taxes.
    This is an example of rebellion because the colonists decided to not pay the taxes.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    The Boston Massacre was a fight between a mob who threw snowballs, stones, and sticks, and a squad of British soldiers. Several colonists were killed and injured.
    The colonists were very mad about this because some of the coonists were hurt and killed in the fight.
    This is an example of violence because people were shot and murdered.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    The Boston Tea Party involved colonists dressing up as Native Americans and boarding a British ship and throwing a bunch of tea overboard.
    Obviously the colonists were upset because they decided to take such a drastic measure.
    This is an example of protest because the colonists did not like the taxes put on tea.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    The Intolerable Acts are laws that British Parliment passed in 1774. These laws effected the British colonies in North America. Because of the Acts the colonies were very mad. This was very much a part of the American Revolution.
    This is an example of violence because during this time a lot of people died.
