1764- The Sugar Act
The first tax on the colonies from the British. It was added to get more money for the British after the French and Indian War. -
1765- Stamp Act
Congress issued “Declaration of Rights and Grievances”, which was basically saying that colonists deserved the same rights as native Britons. This was another case of “no taxation without representation”. -
1774- intolerable acts
The intolerable acts were a punishment to the colonists for them being defiant. They included the Boston Port Act, the Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of Justice Act, and the Quartering Act. -
1776- independence resolution
The independence resolution said that the colonies were independent states, and were not apart of the British. It was passed by the Second Continental Congress. -
1781- Siege of Yorktown
George Washington marched his troops to Virginia to trap British troops. Cornwallis was the commander and his troops got circled by continental and French armies, and the French navy contingent. -
1783- Peace Negotiations
Peace negotiations happened in France and the war ended on September 3rd. -
1787- Constitution
The constitution was signed in 1787 which gave American citizens basic rights and established the Americas national government. -
1791- Bill of Rights
The Bill of Rights is the first 10 amendments added to the constitution that gave its citizens more rights. This included rights such as speech, worship, assembly, etc.
