  • French and Indian War

    The French and British clash over the Ohio River valley area. Ended on February, 1763.
  • Treaty of Paris (1763)

    Ended the French and Indian War and also made France give up all its territories in North America.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Declared colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains without British permission
  • Sugar Act

    Increased duty on foreign sugar imported from the West Indies.
  • Stamp Act

    Mandated the affixing of stamps, certifying payment of tax. Stamps were required on anything made of paper such as legal documents, newspapers, playing cards, etc.
  • Quartering act

    Required certain colonies to provide food and quarters for British Troops.
  • Declaratory Acts

    Asserted power over the colonies.
  • Townshend Acts

    Designed to collect revenue from the colonies by putting duties on imports of glass, lead, paper, and paint.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    When 10 British soldiers opened fire on a group of unarmed Patriots that were throwing snowballs, sticks, stones, etc.
  • Tea Act

    Granted the British East India Company Tea a monopoly on Tea in the colonies.
  • Boston Tea Party

    When a band of Bostonians, disguised as indians, boarded the docked tea ships and dumped 342 chests of tea in the harbor.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Series of laws passed by Parliament after the Boston Tea Party to punish Massachusetts colonists for what they did.

    A meeting in Philadelphia to consider ways of redressing colonial grievances.

    Where they decided to make George Washington Commander-in-chief
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Battle that gave the Americans a confidence boost that showed they can win the war, even though they technically lost the Battle.

    A letter sent to King George III in a last attempt to avoid war.
  • Common Sense

    Pamphlet made by Thomas Paine to convince the people to fight for independence.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Document written by Thomas Jefferson, declaring the 13 colonies to be independent from Great Britain, and approve by congress on July 4, 1776.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    A battle in which the Americans won, but what is significant is that this battle convinced the French that the Americans could win and decided to help them.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Battle in which Cornwallis surrenders after the French and Americans surrounded them both by land and by sea, thus ending the war.
