Seven Years War
Who- Britain and France.
What- War over the Ohio river valley that France expanded into. In 1756 Britain declared war on France which caused them to gain partnership from the Indians. The treaty of Paris eventually ended the war. From this Britain gained Canada and Florida but permitted France to keep its West Island and gave Louisiana to Spain. In time the colonists had to pay for the war expenses.
When- 1756 to 1763.
Where- Ohio river valley.
Why- France expanded into British land. -
Stamp act of 1765
Who- Great Britain and American colonies
What- An act that imposed taxes on the American that required printed materials to be produced on stamped paper.
When- March 22nd 1765 to March 1766 when it was repealed.
Where- This taxed the people in the American colonies.
Why- British parliament passed the act because after the Seven Years War they needed to replenish their finances. -
Boston Massacre
Who- British soldiers and Boston civilians.
What- A confrontation between British soldiers and civilians in Boston where the soldiers shot and killed several people while being harassed by a mob. The event was heavily publicized by leading patriots like Paul Revere and Samuel Adams.
When- March 5, 1770.
Where- Boston, Massachusetts.
Why- the soldiers shot at the mob because they were being harassed by them and they were throwing things at them. -
The Intolerable Acts
Who- British parliament and colonial Boston
What- A series of laws with the intent to suppress unrest in Boston by closing the port and placing it under martial law.
When- June 2nd.
Where- The intolerable acts were placed on Boston.
Why- They placed the laws to punish Boston for the Boston tea party. -
Declaration of Independence
Who- The 13 colonies and Great Britain.
What- The Declaration of Independence was a declaration cutting political ties between America and Great Britain. In it states the motivation for them to seek independence.
When- July 4, 1776.
Where- This happened in the 13 American colonies but also affects Great Britain.
Why- The colonists separated from Great Britain because they were making unreasonable taxes since Great Britain fought a battle on American soil. -
Battle of Yorktown
Who- Great Britain and America. Important people were Charles Cornwallis and George Washington.
What- It was the most important battle of the revolutionary war with George Washington commanding 17,000 troops to take over Yorktown from General Cornwallis and his 9,000 troops.
When- September 28, 1781.
Where- The 13 colonies.
Why- The battle was the most important battle of the revolutionary war because it was the last major battle and the battle where Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington. -
Treaty of Paris
Who- Great Britain and America
What- A treaty that was signed to end the war and to formally grant the United States independence from Great Britain.
When- September 3, 1783.
Where- The treaty was signed in Paris.
Why- The treaty was signed and formed to give independence to the 13 colonies from Great Britain. -
Constitutional Convention
Who- It involves America and its great leaders
What- A convention that was originally called to called to revise the Articles of Confederation but ended up being how America was going to be governed.
When- May 14 to September 17, 1787.
Where- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Why- to come up with how America was going to be governed now that they were independent from Great Britain.
