Navigation Acts
The Navigation Acts were laws that England passed to control the trade between the colonist and other people. It made it harder to trade with people other than England and limited the amount and type of goods they had coming in. -
Quartering Acts
The Quartering acts forced colonists to house British soldiers and provide them with supplies and it wasn't optional you had to do it. The colonists had to cut back on the rebellion and smuggling because they were being watched more closely now that there were soldiers in their homes. -
Proclamation of 1763
This act made it to where the colonist can not go past the Appalachian mountains, it was supposed to keep the natives and the colonists from fighting. It only angered the colonists because they fought for that very land and because taxes were going up with out them having a say in the matter. -
Treaty of Paris of 1763
The treaty of Paris of 1763 was the document that ended the war between the British and the French over the Ohio river valley. It gave the Ohio river valley to the British and forced the french out of the country. -
Sugar Act
The sugar act of 1733 required colonists to pay a 6 pence tax on things like coffee sugar molasses etc, but most didn't so the British lowered the tax to 3 pence and enforced it more strictly in order to get more colonists to pay. They made more money this way. -
Stamp Act
The law passed by the British that held taxes on every piece of paper the colonist used. This provoked anger and defiance among the colonist. -
Quartering Acts
These acts forced colonists to house British soldiers and provide them with supplies. It was not optional, if they were at your house you had to let them in. This provoked anger and resistance among the colonist. -
Stamp Acts Congress
This Was the petition to try and stop the king by boycotting British goods and protesting. This brought chaos to the colonist, there were many protests including non-peaceful ones. -
Declaratory Act
This act stated that Great Britain had total authority to govern the colonies. The colonist ignored it but the struggle for power was caused by this act. -
Townshend Acts
These acts taxed the goods before they were off the ship. They were trying to keep the colonists from knowing they were being taxed to reduce anger. This didn't happen, the colonist had successful protested acts before and tried their luck by immediately protesting this one and they boycott British goods once again. -
Townshend Acts
These acts put a tax on items like tea, paper, lead, paint, glass and more before it even got off the boat. The British hoped that if the colonists didn't see that they were being taxed the would be calm about it. Unfortunately for them they noticed and protest broke out immediately. -
Boston Massacre
One British soldier was guarding the customs location when a mob of angry citizens surrounded him. He called for and received backup, but it wasn't enough;they were attacked to the point of fire. Three people were killed immediately and two later. This was the cause of some very deep tension between the colonists and the British. -
Olive Branch Petition
This was the colonists last attempt to reach peace with the king, they were trying to avoid war. However when he rejected their petition they were provoked to go to war anyways. This was one of the main points for gaining independence. -
Battles of Lexington and Concord
The British were told about the militia's weapons and went to take them, when the 700 soldiers got to Lexington 70 minutemen awaited them. The British won, of course, and they went on to Concord and destroy the weapons easily. Now the colonists are ready they grow in numbers and attack the British all the way back. This is the real start of the war. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
Following the battles of Lexington and Concord the colonists took a hill outside of Boston called Bunker Hill. They didn't have much ammo and were out numbered but they held their own against them. This is the only reason we felt we could go to war against the British and possibly win.
