Navigation Acts
The Navigation acts restricted trade to the colonists. The colonists were only allowed to trade directly with England. All other trading outposts were sent to England. -
Writs of assistance
The British passed the act of Writs of Assistance that allowed the soldiers a "free pass" to search any merchant to see if they were smuggling goods. The colonist began to smuggle good more discreetly after this act was passed. -
Treaty of Paris of 1763
This was the document that ended the war between the British and the french over the Ohio River Valley. this treaty ended french power in North america and expanded British territory and increased debt. The colonists felt that the new taxes against them were unfair, because they didn't ask for the war. -
Proclamation Act of 1763
The King of England Declared that the colonists would not be allowed to pass the proclamation line of '63 ( Appalachian mountains). This caused the colonists to be angry with he king, because they believed they earned the land for themselves. -
Sugar act
The Sugar act taxed all the merchants on the the sugar they were buying for the tea. The merchants were not happy, and had to raise their prices, which made the colonists unhappy. -
Stamp Act
The stamp act taxed all paper goods bought by the colonists. The colonists recuperated these acts by protests and boycotts. The stamp and sugar acts were eventually repealed in 1766. -
Quartering Acts
the quartering acts allowed soldiers to make any colonist provide housing for them, without any complaints. This was so the British could know who was possibly a rebel and be able to pick them out. The colonists didn't like this, and felt like it was an invasion of their private property. -
Stamp Act Congress
The Stamp act Congress was the "First congress in America". It was held between October 7th to 25th, 1765. The meeting consisted a representative from each colony. The colonists were mostly in favor of the meeting. -
Declaratory Acts
The Declaratory acts Were the acts that Showed that Britain was still in power. The colonists reacted by rebelling, and disproving the British party. -
Townshend Acts
The Townshend acts were an imported tax. it taxed paper, tea, lead, glass, and paint. The colonists rebelled, by making their own things that were being taxed. -
Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre was where there were a bunch of drunk colonists harassing a British soldier. the British soldier called for backup and then someone threw a club. The British began to to shoot, killing 5. The Colonists reacted by spreading propaganda against the British. -
Tea Act
The tea act was when the British took away all of the taxes except for tea, and lowered it. It gave the East India Company a monopoly on the tea. The Colonists reacted with the Boston tea party, and boycotting the tea. -
Boston tea party
The Boston tea party was where The Sons of Liberty threw out all the tea from one of the ships at night. They dressed up as Indians and dumped all of the tea, and only the tea. This liberated some of the colonists, and made others worried about that British wrath. Some colonists were happy that the tea got dumped. -
Coersive Acts
Known as the Intolerable acts. Was a punishment to the Bostons for the Boston tea party. This was a reaction from the British to the Boston Tea party. The colonists reacted by secretly still going arounf the British's backs. -
First Continental Congress
This was the first meeting of delegates from twelve of the thirteen colonies. The colonists reacted by some division. Some were happy about the meeting and others weren't -
Battles of Lexington and Concord
This is the battle that started the American Revolution. Colonists and British troops fired at each other, 8 colonists dying. This battle is famously known for "the shot heard around the world". The colonists reacted by preparing more minutemen to fight for battle. -
Second continental Congress
The second continental congress was the 2nd convention of delegates from the thirteen colonies. The meeting took place in Philadelphia. This was the colonists way of meeting to determine the fate of the colonies -
Battle of Bunker Hill
The Battle of Bunker Hill was one of the first victories for the colonists, subconsciously. Although the British technically won the battle, they lost 1,000 men, while the colonists lost only 400. The colonists reacted by celebrating their "win" and improving their battle tactics. -
Olive Branch Petition
This was the colonist's last shot at peace with Britain and the king. They sent a petition that was asking for peace with the King, but the King refused the petition. The colonists reacted by forming a big meeting to try and decide whether to declare independence. -
Common Sense
Common sense was a book by Thomas Payne, with a goal of recruiting the fence sitters to become patriots. The Colonists reacted by some were converted to loyalists, and some became patriots. -
Declaration of Independence
The declaration of Independence was a document that was a decree of independence from Britain. The 13 colonies were declaring themselves free from British rule. The colonists reacted by some were elated, and some were angered.
