    The Native Americans pass down stroies by oral traditon. They tell many myths and legends. Many of them believe that nature plays a major role in their society. They believe in the good and bad of the people and say that Mother Nature will lash out and "punish" the bad.

    Coyote Finishes His Work
    This was a story passed down by oral tradition. It talks about the coyote being wise and helping the Native Americans. In helping these people, the coyote was also said to be a trickster and played many jokes on the people. He sometimes even caused death.

    The Puritans land in Plymouth, MA. The Puritans had very religious customs. Their stories focused more on the Holy aspect of life and what God would do to punish them. They wrote in plain style. This included simple sentence structure.

    The Crucible
    This story takes place in Salem, MA. There were many rumors within the town of the teenage girls being witches. The word "crucible" means a severe test or trial and this is exactly what happened in Salem. Many people were trialed and falsely accused. The girls pretended to see people with the devil and had many innocent people killed. No one ever really knew if the girls were involved in witchcraft or not.

    This is the idea that one must go beyond himself or their life to find a more ideal world. They seek wisdom form spirits and are interested by the spirit world.

    In this time period, writers and poets explored the conflicts between good and evil. these writing have a sad, depressed and dark sort of feel to them. A very well known poet of this time is Edgar Allen Poe.
  • The Raven

    The Raven
    In this story, Edgar Allen Poe shows much emotion as he writes about a raven. the raven symbolizes a sickness that has traveled with him. This sickness has killed loved ones and people very dear to him. In the story, the raven is always at the speakers window singing a sad song. The speaker feels as if he can't escape just as Edgar Allen Poe feels like the sickness will never leave.
