    British Parliament passed the Stamp Act in March of 1775 and American colonists were charged taxes on newspapers, wills, and playing cards. They protested against the act before it went into effect which led to petitions and refusal to pay taxes. Their identity was shown by expresing unity with one another as they protested.

    The Olive Branch Petition
    John Dickinson wrote the Olive Branch Petition and American colonists sent the it to King George III to show their loyalty, but he ended up refusing it. This led to colonists wanting independence and they realized that they would have to stand against Britian together which started the Revolutionary War.

    The Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston, was adopted by Congress which made America free from any political connection to Great Britian and gave them the power to levy war, make peace, trade, and be an independent nation.

    The Treaty of Paris was signed by the United States and Great Britain which ended the Revolutionary War. This created peace and Great Britian left New York City. America was now independent.

    All of the 13 colonies were apart of the United States after the Constitution was ratified by all of them. America now had 13 states.

    The U.S. purchased Louisiana ( 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River) from France for nearly $15 million dollars. This made America double in size and they were now popular for trade.

    These American laws made by James Madison and Thomas Jefferson kept American ships from foreign trade between 1807 and 1812 which made New England angry. They were made to avoid war, but they caused war instead although it did cause independence in manufacturing.

    The Embargo Act caused America to declare war on Great Britian which was the War of 1812. The British won, but America gained repsect from foreign countries.

    This effort was made by Congress to stop rivalries over slavery because Missouri wanted slavery to be permitted. Southerners disliked it because Congress was making decisions about slavery. This created sectionalism in America since slavery was permitted in the South and wasn't permitted in the North.

    President Andrew Jackson negotiated with eastern Indians to move west in exchange for their homeland. The Indians that wanted to remain in the east were told that they'd be citizens , but they were forced to leave. This removed Indian culture and created more American culture.

    This was the expansion of the U.S. throughout America. It housed immigrants, created international trade, and made Americans believe that because of God, American expansion was inevitable.

    This was organized by Elizabeth Stanton and Lucretia Mott devoted women's suffrage, education, and the right to divorce their husbands. This would create equality of men and women in America.

    This Compromise was 5 seperate bills that were passed to keep the balance of power between slave and free states. It ended slave trade, but not slavery. It made the Underground Railroad active and made Americans take a stance on slavery.

    This was a financial problem because international economy was failing. America was once at the peak of economic success and trade, but now, their trade was failing.

    Abraham Lincoln is elected as the first Republican president. He was against slavery which made America see racism differently and gave some African Americans a voice.

    The 13th Amendment,which abolished slavery,was ratified. This gave blacks the freedom that they wanted even though segregation and racsim still existed.

    There were now 4 black members in house due to the laws and attempts to abolish slavery and end the KKK. Northerners were tired of helping the southerners because they had financial issues of their own. Reconstruction helped, but it did not end conflict in the divided nation.

    Technology innovations caused a very destructive war between the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire against the Allied forces of Great Britain, the United States, France, Russia, Italy and Japan. Meanwhile, in America, art, fashion, and movies became popular.

    This was the age of the Flappers, the Ford, jazz,Harlem Renaissance(African-Americans with a voice), movies, and drinking. America was all about fun and alcohol during this time.

    Due to excessive spending in the Roaring Twenties, America went into debt.America's identity was lost and confused because the population was now poor.

    During his presidency, Franklin R. Roosevelt created the New Deal with his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, which would give rights to the less fortunate and help end the Great Depression. Roosevelt gave America their identity back as a strong and powerful nation by encouraging them and helping end fincancial problems.
