The U.S Constitution Ratified
The Constitution was not clear on who was a citizen. Only white men that were free had rights and could vote. Enslaved and indigenous people were not included -
Naturalization Act
Only "free white people" were able to become U.S citizenship. Which excluded nonwhite ,indigenous immigrants, and enslaved people -
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The U.S citizenship was now granted to the people in Mexico that lived on the land the U.S had taken but they were discriminated against and often did not enjoy their rights. -
Dred Scott Decision
African Americans had their legal rights taken away by the Supreme Court and told they would never become citizens of the U.S -
The 14th Amendment
Everyone including the enslaved people were now citizens -
The Naturalism Act Update
Citizenship was now open to African decsent but still not Asian immigrants -
The Chinese Exclusion Act
Chinese workers were banned from U.S citizenship and immigrating to the U.S. This reflected racial prejudice. -
Indian Citizenship Act
The Native Americans in the U.S were recognized as citizens but some states still didn't let them vote -
Magnuson Act
Finally allowed Chinese to becomes U.S citizens but the immigration from China but was very limited -
The McCarren- Walter Act
Ended all laws that blocked people based on race from becoming citizens -
The Immigration and Nationality Act
Gave ways for immigrants in Asia, Latin America and Africa to receive citizenship. -
The I.R.C.A
Undocumented immigrants were now provided to citizenship, this helped 3 million people grant citizenship. -
DACA
Allowed some undocumented immigrants granted a work permit but no citizenship.
