Civil Rights Act of 1866
The legislation was enacted by the Congress in 1865 but vetoed by President Andrew Johnson. It was later passed by the congress in 1866 overcoming the president's veto with 2/3 majority of the congress. The civil rights act of 1866 was mainly targeted to protect the civil rights of people of African descent in United States. -
Formed the National Woman Suffrage Association
Started by Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Caddy Stanton with an ultimate goal to achieve voting rights for women. -
Page Act of 1875
Immigration as a Federal Responsibility:
As the number of immigrants coming to the United States started to increase, the congress declared immigration as a federal responsibility. -

General Immigration Act of 1882
In 1882, United States started charging 50 cents as a tax on all immigrants. The government also started excluding people who were considered undesirable. -
Chinese Exclusion Act 1882
It was signed by President Chester A Arthur. It prohibited Chinese labor from entering the United States for 10 years. -
Immigration Act of 1891
Signed by President Benjamin Harrison, this act brought laws applicable to immigrants from all countries other than China. Chinese immigrants already had laws in place to govern their immigration. This law required all the immigrants to provide biographical information at the ports of entry to the United States. -
First Immigration Station opened at Ellis Island
First immigration station was opened at Ellis Island. Annie Moore (15 F, Ireland) was the first person to be processed at the station. -
Geary Act
This act required all Chinese persons or persons of Chinese descent to carry an affirmative proof of lawful residence in the US. Failing to do so resulted in deportation or one year of hard labor. Chinese persons were not eligible to be witnesses in courts and bails were not granted to the Chinese people. -

Forakar Act
Aka Organic Act of 1900.
Puerto Rico became a part of the United States just after the Spanish-American war. On April 12, 1900, President William McKinney passed a federal law establishing US government on the island of Puerto Rico. -
Jones-Shafroth Act, 1917
This Act granted citizenship to Puerto Ricans born or after April 25th, 1898. -
19th Amendment
Congress passed Woman Suffrage Amendment. It granted the the Right to Vote to all the women in the United States. -
National Origins Act, 1924
This law restricted the entry of immigrants by assigning quotas to the people from southern and eastern Europe. It completely excluded people from Asian countries. It was only in effect till the 1960s.
