    Between the end of the Civil War and the end of the 1800's the United states became and industrial giant. There was the rise of the heavy industry and the technlogy boom where all of this new technology was being built and the industries got so busy with new products to sell.
  • The Transcontinential Railroad

    The Transcontinential Railroad
    The completion of the transcontinental railroad changed the nation. Western agricultural products, coal, and minerals could move freely to the east coast. Just as the Civil War united North and South, the transcontinental railroad united East and West. Passengers and freight could reach the west coast in a matter of days instead of months at one-tenth the cost. Settlers rushed into what was previously considered a desert wasteland.     The Pendelton Act
    With the new national market the businesses grew. The railroad was expanded to 1000 miles of track. The merger movement would merge all of these companies together under one railroad and sell their products together to make more money.
  • Brooklyn merges with NYC

    January 1, 1898 when, after a long political campaign and public relations battle during the 1890s, according to the new Municipal Charter of "Greater New York", Brooklyn was consolidated with the other cities, boroughs and counties to form the modern "City of New York" surrounding the Upper New York Bay with five constituent boroughs.

    US declares war on Spain
    The Monroe Doctrine, which since 1823 had viewed any European intervention in the Americas as a threat to U.S. security, coupled with the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana harbor precipitated the U.S. engagement.

    The United States annexed Hawaii because they felt threaghtened and thought it was a great naval base.

  • Agricultural Adjustment Act

    New Deal law pays farmers to reduce production, causing higher crop prices and farm profits.
  • Voyage of the St Louis

    The St Louis was a German transatlantic liner that carried over 900 refugees and only one non refugee. the St Louis sailed from Hamburg, Germany, to Havana, Cuba only to be denied from docking at first but later 28 passengers were allowed to disembark from the boat. The St Louis then had to sail all the way back to Europe.
  • Japan Bombs Pearl Harbor

    Islands of Hawaii, near Oahu - The Japanese attack force under the command of Admiral Nagumo, consisting of six carriers with 423 planes, is about to attack. The first attack wave of 183 Japanese planes takes off from the carriers located 230 miles north of Oahu and heads for the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor.
  • D-Day begins

    D-Day begins with the landing of 155,000 Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy in France. The allied soldiers quickly break through the Atlantic Wall and push inland in the largest amphibious military operation in history.
  • The Warsaw Pact

    The Soviet Union and seven of its European satellites sign a treaty establishing the Warsaw Pact, a mutual defense organization that put the Soviets in command of the armed forces. This is important because it was basically something that was formed to go against NATO and to protect who they wanted to be in power. This literally separated the world into two groups; with America at the top on one and the Soviet Union at the top on the other.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    The bus boycott was the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement to get equal rights for African Americans. Rose Parks sat in the white section of a bus, and refused to get up. This motivated other African Americans to boycott and fight for their rights.
  • Little Rock NIne

    This event was when 9 African American students attended an all white school. This helped advance in equal rights in the Civil Rights Movement because the 9 students were willing and happy to attend school. Also, the blacks were encouraged to take part in this new idea.
  • Cuban Missle

    Soviets constructing launching facilites on Cuban grounds is very scary for Americans as Cuba is 90 miles away from Florida. This was a 13 day period that the Russians and America ever came so close to a nuclear showdown. This is very significant because it truly took a toll on Americans and what was reality in the warfare of this day and age.
  • Mikhail Gorbachev resigns

    oviets were unhappy after the Cold War with Gorbachev. He was anit-communist, but the Soviets still wanted to have Communism. With the Soviets making harsh maneuvers, Gorbachev resigned in 1991.
  • Post Cold War (1991-present)

    After the Axis was defeated the US and USSR became suspicious of each other because of their different ideologies. The Americans valued individual liberty, the Soviets valued communism.
  • The Soviet Union is Abolished Boris Yeltsin becomes president

    Mikhail Gorbachev resigned from presidency after long years of conflict and when the communist party fell, he fell. There could not be a communist leader for a country that was no longer communist. This is very important because it ended the tension between the two high powers (America and the Soviet Union).
  • Twin Towers (1991-present)

    On this day, a terrorist attack occured on the World Trade Center. Planes were high jacked by terrorists and they flew planes into the twin towers, and the pentagon. One plane was meant to hit the white house, but crashed down into a field.
  • Obama elected President (1991-present)

    Barrack Obama is our first african american president. He was elected in 2008 and is currently our president. This is his 2nd term.
