  • 13th Amendment Ratified

    The 13th amendment states that slavery or involuntary servitude, except as a form as punishment for crimes, shall not exist within the US.
  • 14th Amendment Ratified

    The 14th Amendment provides rights to all citizens of the US.
  • !5th Amendment Ratified

    The 15th Amendment allowed all men to vote, except that it didn't apply to women.
  • Horace Greeley Dies

    Horace Greeley ran as a Democrat/Liberal Republican in the election of 1872, and died on November 29, 1872.
  • The Battle of Little Bighorn

    The battle of little bighorn was caused by a discovery of gold in the Sioux Black Hills so Custer was sent to round up the Native Americans currently living in the Black Hills. The Sioux leader, Sitting Bull, refused to move and gathered warriors at Little Bighorn River where they were joined by another chief, named Crazy Horse, and his followers. Custer and all his men were killed in the battle.
  • Chief Joseph Surrenders

    Chief Joseph, of the Nez Perce, led his people in an attempt to resist the takeover of their land in the Oregon Territory. In 1877 Chief Joseph and his people were order to move to a reservation in Idaho, to which he agreed to at first. After some members of his tribe killed a group of settlers, Joseph tried to flee to Canada. After traveling to Canada with his tribe for 3 months, they were finally surrounded by the US army and on October 4, 1977 he surrendered.
  • The Dawes Act of 1887

    The Dawes Act was a bill strongly encouraging natives to assimilate with the rest of the American culture.
  • The Battle of Wounded Knee

    The Dawes Act completely changed the natives way of life, and resulted in them turning towards a man named wovoka in 1890. He claimed they would regain would regain their greatness by preforming a ritual known as the Ghost Dance. Reservation officials became alarmed by this dance and arrested and shot sitting bull. The Sioux then gathered at wounded knee creek. This resulted in the battle of wounded knee, and is considered the last battle between the natives and the US.
