    In 1850 there was a compomise that added California as a free state. This caused trouble becuase now there are 16 free states and 15 slave states. There was now a new law which every runaway slave must be brought back to there owner and the northerns did not like this.

This debate will soon play a huge role in the future because after this debate, Lincoln is widely kown and establishes himself as a leader of the Republican Party.This was a huge reason that Lincoln won the presidency.
