Fort Sumter Attacked
At 4:30 a.m. Confederates under General Pierre Beauregard open fire with 50 cannons upon Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. The battle continues for 34 hours before coming to an end. Luckily no soldiers were killed. This is an important event during the American Civil War, becuase the battle itself leads to the beginning of the Civil War. -

At dawn on September 17, Major General Joseph Hooker’s Union corps mounted a powerful assault on Lee’s left flank that began the Battle of Antietam, and the single bloodiest day in American military history.
