    South Carolina seceded from the U.S. when Abraham Lincoln was elected as president. Because he hated slavery, South Carolina saw this as a threat and continued to have slavery in the state.

    The Battle of Antietam was considered the bloodiest day in America's history. During this battle, over 26,000 men were killed, wounded, or missing on both sides. The battle was considered a draw, but it stopped Lee from going into Maryland and he went back to Virginia.

His death was a huge setback for the Confederacy, affecting not only the military but also the morale of its army and the public.
