Start of H.U.A.C.
The House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) was an investigative committee of the United States House of Representatives. It was originally created in 1938 to uncover citizens with Nazi ties within the United States. However, it has become better known for its role in investigating alleged disloyalty and subversive activities on the part of private citizens, public employees, and those organizations suspected of having communist ties. -

Alger Hiss
Alger Hiss was involved in the establishment of the United Nations both as a U.S. State Department and U.N. official. Alger Hiss was suspected of being Communist and was senteced 5 years in prison, however he only served 3 and was released from prison on November 27, 1954 (case was resolved on 1951). This event showed how far the H.U.A.C. were going with hunting down people who were believed to be involed with communist activities. -

Secret Responsibilities Program
The FBI operated a secret "Responsibilities Program" that distributed anonymous documents with evidence from FBI files of Communist affiliations, many people accused in these "blind memoranda" were fired without any further process. -
American citizens executed
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg (American citizens) were executed with the electric chair for conspiracy to commit espionage, relating to passing information to the USSR. The execution marked the dramatic finale of the most controversial espionage case of the Cold War. -
Decline Of McCarthyism
Edward R. Murrow hosts "A Report on Senator Joseph R. McCarthy" and criticises McCarthy's ideas. He says that his primary achievement was confusing the public mind, as between the internal and the external threats of Communism. This marks the decline of McCarthyism. -

"Joe Must Go" recall event that ended up in a petition that gained many supporters for Anti-McCarthyism. This marked the end of McCarthyism. -
Death Of McCarthy
Joseph McCarthy died on May 2, 1957 (aged 48) in Bethesda, Maryland. His death was caused by hepatitis which, at this point of his life, labelled an alcoholic and looked down upon. -

House Committee on Un-American Activities [HUAC] (who later changed their name to "House Committee on Internal Security") was abolished in 1975.
