Jamestown New Colony
Rebels against the british, left on a ship and traveled to what is present day America. They were seeking freedom, wheather is was religious freedom or wanting land, they all wanted to get away from the britsh. America had land, gems, gold, bison, and trees. It was "perfect" to the settlers. As a result Jamestown was created, it was a settlement where they lived. They would soon figure out they built it on Native American land. It was good until they started to run out of food and resources. -
Tobacco to the Rescue
As more and more colonies form and people want to come to the new land, they started to struggle. They were running out of resourses. When they traveled over to the new land they packed mostly tools to get and mine gold, but unfortunately there wasn't any. They should have packed more food, and items they actually need. They were starving, but one smart man named John Rolfe had an idea to grow tobacco His idea would allow them to have an income from farming. This would help them thrive. -
The Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower compact was the first written goverening document in the colony. It was written by the pilgrims, and signed on the ship in November. It was to prevent the colonist from making their own goverment and doing what they want to do whenever they wanna do it. It prevented choas before they even landed. Mostly men signed this document. It was important to keeping order and organization. -
First Thanksgiving in Plymoth
The pilgirms also came across the Atlantic but they came to gain religious freedom. The landed at Plymoth. They had many tribes around them, and they formed a friendly relationship with one called Pocaknowan. They worked together and shared ideas. They also had a tribe that was both of their enemies. So together they defeated the rival which sealed their fate in the new place. The Pocaknowan people and the pilgrims celebrated with a huge feast, which we know as the first Thanksgiving. -
Proclamation of 1763
This line was a boundary down the Appalachian Mountains created by King George lll. It was created by him to help keep the colonies organized. Also it was supposed to help stablize the relationship with the native people through trade, settlements, and land purchases on the western frontier. -
Stamp Act
The stamp act was passed by the British to directly tax the colonists. It stated that the colonists had to pay taxes on every piece of printed paper they used. Things such as playing cards,and newspapers were taxed. -
Townshend Acts
It was several acts passed by the British. It was named after Charles Townshend who introduced it. The purpose was to raise revenue to provide the colonies salaries for the governers, etc. -
Boston Massacre
This was a shooting by the british where red coats killed 5 male colonists,and injured 6 others. The event was famously pictured in an engraving by Paul Revere. He painted a visual that would become famous, and remembered forever. -
Tea Party
It was a political protest by the Sons of LIberty in Boston. They didn't like th fact that the British controlled the tea imports that come to the colonies, and the taxes on it. After they refused to change it, a group of men boarded the ship and destroyed it by dumping it into the harbor. -
Meeting In Philadelphia
It was a gathering in Philadelphia were delagated from 12 out of the 13 colonies came to dicuss and meet. It was called to respond to the Intolerable acts. There was 56 ther. They considered boycotting, get a petition, etc. -
Lexington and Concord
They were the first war interactions of the Revoultionary War. They were outbreaks of fighting. Thousands on both sides were killed. They fought to death, and they refused to let the other side win. -
Intolerable acts
There was a series of acts that set of the colonist to begin the war. It was after the Boston tea party as a sort of retaleation against colonists. It was the reesponse to the tea party that punished the colonies. -
The Boston Campaigan: Battle of Bunker Hill
The battle took place at Breeds Hill most of the time during the seige of Boston. This took place early in the Revoultionary war.
It was named after the adjacent hill where the war took place. -
Ben's Riders
Ben Franklin was born on January 17th 1706 in Boston,Massachusetts. He created a ssystem of "night riders" or messangers that would work to get mail or information from one place to another. They used it in the war, and was a lot faster than any other mail system in its time. They are called Night riders because they were required to ride through the night. -
Declaration of Independence
It was decided on by the Congress July 4th,1776. It stated that the thirteen colonies, in war with British, were independent. John Adams was a main leader for indenpendence. The draft was finialized when it was unanimously voted on July 2nd,1776. This is present day fourth of July, or indepandence day. We celebrate the birth of our nation. -
Landing at Kip's Bay
This was a British expedition during the New York campaign and New Jersery campaign. It occured near present day Manhattan. -
Battle of Trenton
The battle occured when George Washington crossed the Delware River north of Trenton. The cross was dangerous and was in the early morning. -
Killing Nathan Hale
This occured in the early summer whwere he was captured. He was a soilder and was very intelligent. Unfortunaly he was hung by the british. -
Battle of Saratoga
The Battle was a turning point in the war and, would decide the Britsh fate. The battle consist of two different fights. They were fought eighteen days apart, just south of Saratoga,NY. It was from September 19th - October 7th 1777. -
Valley Forge
This was the place where Washington and his men camped for the winter of 1777-1778. They had to face sickness and harsh weather. More men died from sickness than men on the battlefield. Washington lost a lot of his men to small pox. Small pox was a deadly contagious sickness that went around. The men also had to face freezing temperatures. -
The Culper Ring
This was a spy organization. It was createde by Benjamin Tallmadge under George Washington. It was a ring the carried information back and forth or where ever it needed to go. It was in the height od the war. -
Battle of Yorktown
General Washington and a french general,Comte de Rochambeau, won over a british army directed by Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis. It was the last big land battle of the American Revolution. -
Cotton Gin
The cotton gin was invetnted by Eli Whitney, an american investor. It was an inportant invention of the industrail reveloution and played a huge part in the South's economy. It made the cotton crop worth more and increased the use of slavery. The gin itself was a mechaical device that removed the seeds from the cotton faaster than a human could. -
Erie Canal
The canal is in New York and is about 386miles. It has 36 locks due to the different evelations. Its a useful and vaulable water route. I t took eight years to build, 1817-1825. It was opened in October 26th, 1825. -
Fredrick Douglass Speaks Up
Fredrick Douglass was an american social reformer. In the days after he escaped slavery, he spoke up about it. He was a strong speaker that was very influncecal.He was a leader of the abitionist movement. -
Underground Railroad
It was a network of antislavery safe houses. Harriet Tubman was a slave and escaped. She was born into slavery and when she escaped she helped free over 300 slaves using the underground railroad. Without her hundreds of slaves wouldn't have been free and woudn't have their rights. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The act was passed by the United States Congress. It was super contraversial between the north and south. The act said that any slaves caught running away or had escaped would be returned back to there masters. It was nicknamed the "bloodhound law" because htey would use bloodhounds to tracl the runaway slaves down. -
South Carolina Breaks Away
The state of South Carolina voted itself to not be apart of the Unitted States. Within days more states in the south followed. However the north didn't. They broke away because Abraham Lincoln was elected president. They thought that he was a abolitionist. They also thought its was bias becuase they assumed he was going to end slavery.
