  • Fort Sumter

    Lincoln tries to resupply Fort Sumter and the Confederacy sees it as a chance to attack. The Union surrenders to the Confederacy with no cassualties.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    The public was eager for the north to advance on Richmond. Abraham Lincoln advanced the troops to Richmond. The Union retreated because the confederacy received beckup.
  • Battle Of Antitam

    This battle was Lees attempt to invade the North that was unsuccessful. This battle led to the Union winning, and would shape America forever.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Lincoln needed more people on board with him in the war. He created the Emancipation Proclamation as a war act to free slaves. This didn't free any slaves, but help the Union fight for human freedom.
  • The Formation of the 54th Massachusetts

    This was the first official black regiment that served in the Union. Their fight at fort Wagner was benneficialk to the union army as a turning point.
  • Battle of Gettsburg

    After a victory over the Union forces, General Lee decided to march to Northern Virginia to hope to finish off the union. The union wins this battle and also gains claim of the Mississippi. Lee would not even launch an attack on US soil.
  • Defeat of Vicksburg

    This was one of the Unions most successful campaigns. Grant decided to try and take another city. He then starts to defeat the forces at Vicksburg and takes the city in siege.
  • New York City Draft Riots

    Violent riots that started out in lower Manhatten over the new Congress law that people who were drafted had to serve in the war.
  • Gettysburg Adress

    It was a 200-word speech that Abraham Lincoln created that lasted 2 minutes. It will go down as one of the best speeches in American history.
  • Sherman's March To Sea

    A military campaign composed by William Tecumseh Sherman who marched through Georgia from November and ended in December with the capture of fort Savanah.
  • Passing of the 13th amendment

    The 13th passed through the senate and house. It abolishes slavery and involuntary work unless someone is incarcerated. Even though this was a big step people got around it through loopholes. This would start mass incarceration.
  • Freedman's Bureau

    Lincoln signed a bill so that the new freed African Americans will now have a place that helps them in society now.
  • Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

    General Lee would surrender in this war after a mass defeat against the Union. This few hour battle brought the civil war to an end. The Confederates would soon sign a treaty and join the Union again
  • Assassination of Lincoln

    Five days after the surrender, John Wilkes Booth assassinated Lincoln because Booth was a Confederate sympathizer.This made Andrew Johnson president.
  • 14th Amendment

    This amendment granted citizenship to all people born or naturalized in the US. This also included the new freed African Americans.
  • Plessy vs Ferguson

    This was a case brought in front of the supreme court as if racial segregation laws were constitutional. The court said they were okay if they were equal in quality.
  • Creation of the 15th

    This amendment allowed African Americans to vote seeing that they are US citizens.
  • End of Reconstruction

    It was the end of the Civil war reconstruction, but slaves were not considered equal still and many segregation laws would be passed. Things like lynchings would occur and civil rights eras.
