Before we were alve, people traded cows, sheep and all sorts of stuff. This was called Bartering. It was hard to trade, because some people would say no and some of the stuff they would give to people was very valueable. If yours was not very valuable that you wanted to trade they would say no.

Cowrie shells were a small and large kind of shell. They were used to pay for things. They were used because they were difficult to copy and there wasn't many of them. They were special and valuable.
