  • Brown vs BoE

    a group of parents filed a suit against the BoE in order to end segregation in schools. The result was desegregation in schools.
  • Thurgood Marshall

    NAACP organizer. Deeply supported civil rights. Became supreme court judge. Lawyer in Brown vs BOE.
  • Earl Warren

    Served as a supreme court justice and was known for groundbreaking decisions, such as the Brown vs BoE case.
  • Rosa Parks

    Sparked the Montgomery bus boycott by refusing to leave a seat when told to do so. She was then arrested
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Boycott led by a MLK to desegregate busses in the south.
  • Civil Rights act of 1957

    Gave voting rights for African Americans. Signed in 1957.
  • Nation of Islam

    Represented African american roots. Those that followed the Nation of Islam were known as black muslims. Malcom X was an important member.
  • SNCC

    Student nonviolent coordinating committee. Played major roles in several different civil rights movements such as sit ins and freedom rides.
  • Freedom Rides

    Riders rode on buses into the segregated south. Led to desegregation in buses.
  • March on Washington

    Largest demonstration in US capital. Led over 250,000 people on a tour of D.C.
  • Medgar Evers

    Attempted to desegregate Mississippi after WWII. Assassinated 1963.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Ended major forms of discrimination and desegregated schools. Signed 1964.
  • Malcom X

    human rights activist. One of the most influential African americans. Accused of teaching black supremacy and racism. Was of the muslim faith. Assassinated 1964.
  • Black Power

    An idea taught by Malcom x, that black people were superior than the whites that surrounded them.
  • 24th Amendment

    Prohibits the conditioning of federal voting with payment of taxes. signed 1964.
  • Freedom Summer

    A campaign in 1964 launched to get as many African American voters registered as possible.
  • Voting Rights Act

    Outlawed discriminating voting practices. Signed in 1965.
  • Black Panthers

    A society that involved itself in the black power movement.
  • Kerner Commision

    A commission established to investigate race riots in 1967.
  • Matin Luther King Jr.

    Important civil rights activist. Responsible for organizing non-violent resistance everywhere. Gave the “I have a dream” speech. assassinated 1968
