Compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 was an agreement to ease tension caused by the expansion of slavery into western territories. One of the agreements that they made was the Fugitive Slave Act which meant U.S citzens had to return slaves who had escaped from their owners. -
Publication of Uncle Toms's Cabin
A book about anti-slaverly written by Harriet Stowe. This book helped lay groundwork for the Civil War. -
Kansas- Nebraska Act
In 1854 a law called for the creation of two new territories Kansas and Nebraska. It stated that the citizens in each territory would decide whether slavery would be allowed there. -
Bleeding Kansas
Bleeding Kansas was a series of violent political confrontations between anti-slavery states and pro-slavery state. Took place in Kansas between 1854-1861. -
Brooks/Sumner Affair (Violence in Congress)
Preston Brooks a congressman beat and injured senator Charles Sumner because of a speech that was given by Sumner. -
Dred Scott Decision
A case for Dred Scott, a slave living in Missouri filed a suit against his owner. The jury ruled against Scott they decided that all slaves had no right to rule in court. -
John Brown's Raid
John Brown lead a group of 21 men to Virgina to capture weapons stored by the U.S. The goal was to destory the slave system. -
