Day joined the war
In the summer of 1916 Germans Paul, Tjaden, Muller, Albert, and a few others sign up to be in world war 1 -
Kemmerick
Paul goes to visit his friend kemmerick in the hospital who has been injured in the war. That day paul actually watched kemmrick die in that hospital. Quote-"Death is working through from within. It already has command in the eyes" -
mullers new boots
Paul took the boots that had belonged to his friend kemmrick who had just died to his friend muller because they were his size and he really wanted them."I nod and wonder what to say to encourage him. His lips have fallen away, his mouth has become larger, his teeth stick out and look as though they were made of chalk." -
New troops arive
Paul already looks experinced to the new troops that were coming in.Kropp jokes, "Seen the infants?" -
Human Animals
Paul talks about having animal insticts helping them during the war."We reach the zone where the front begins and become on the instant human animals" -
Planes
Search lights are sweeping the sky. "one of them pauses, and quivers a little. Immediately a second is beside him, a black insect is caught between them and tries to escape – the airman. He hesitates, is blinded and falls" -
Poet
Paul in all the silence starts saying poetic things like "We are forlorn like children, and experienced like old men, we are crude and sorrowful and superficial – I believe we are lost" -
The Horses
All of the horses were getting injured and one of the men was a former farmer and it bothered him so he was yelling to shoot them and put them out of there misery. But shooting would give there location to the enime so they couldn't shoot. Quote - Kat- "Are you mad" -
Bombs
There are bombs going off every where and one of they lands close to where they are. "Mighty fine fire-works if they weren't so dangerous" -
Himmelstos
Himmelstos didn't say as much as he did when he was at boot camp. "He seems to have learned already that the front-line isn't a parade-ground" -
Russians
Paul is put guard over the russians while he is there he says that they don't talk and when they do they say very little. "Their life is obscure and guiltless" - Paul -
Paul wonders
Paul wonders over one man's three-day death: if he is thinking of his wife, his kids, and if their memory is what gives him strength to continue fighting to live. The men think they hear the name "Elise" being called out.
Paul tells us, "The days are hot and the dead lie unburied" -
Paul kills a frenchmen
Paul a french man crawls into the trench and paul pulls out his dagger and stabs him but the man does not die instantly he lives for many hours and suffers. Paul starts to fill very guilty and trys to save him but he is gone."Comrade, I did not want to kill you […] you were only an idea to me before, an abstraction […] that called forth its appropriate response. It was that abstraction I stabbed. But now I see you are a man like me" -
suprise attack
A surprise gas attack takes many of them in one shot, as they don't learn to panic fast enough. They "choke to death with hemorrhages and suffocation" -
Pauls leave
Paul got 2 week of leave so he went home to his mother who has cancer and to his dad who just wants to talk about war stories. He knows that no one will under stand the war if they had not been there them self. -
Tranning camp
Paul Was sent to a special tranning camp where there were people begging for his scraps so he gave them some of the cakes that his mother had made him. -
Worn out guns
The troop is in low spirts because there guns are beging to ware out in the last battle 2 of the mens guns hurt them selfs. "The Front is a cage in which we must await fearfully whatever may happen. We lie under the network of arching shells and live in suspense of uncertainty. Over us Chance hovers"-paul -
normal jobs
Everyone doesn't know what to do after the war so they just go to work there normal jobs. "The war has ruined us for everything" -
The supply depot
The Supply depot was destroyed so all the men do for about three weeks is Eat, drink, and smoke. "the town gradually vanishes under the shells and we lead a charmed life"- Paul -
Paul dies
He stands up bravely after this train of thought, as if now fully ready to face Death, to lose to it:Quote- "Let the months and years come, they bring me nothing more I am so alone, and so without hope that I can confront them without fear"
