    Early History of America

    On the 6th of September, 1620, a group of 102 pilgrims sailed from England to America, on the ship the "MayFlower". They left England because they wanted religious and political freedom.
    On the 9th November, 1620, The ship finally reached land and some pilgrims build a village there.The village was called Plymouth, in the first winter was very cold and 45 people died , but the pilgrims didn´t lose hope.
    After a few months the pilgrims met a Native American for the first time.

    American Holidays and Traditions
    The first Thangksgiving was in 1621. The pilgrims invited the Native Americans to a big meal to celebrate their first succesful harvest. They ate duck and deer meat, corn and squash.
    Today, most Americans want to spend the thanksgiving day with their families. They celebrate it with a special meal.They usually have turkey, yams and mashed potatoes.
    On the 4th of July people celebrate the birthday of the United States of America.

    American phase of a worldwide nine years’ war (1754–63) fought between France and Great Britain. It determined control of the vast colonial territory of North America. The French and Indian War began over the specific issue of whether the upper Ohio River valley was a part of the British Empire, and therefore open for trade and settlement by Virginians and Pennsylvanians.

    First Independence Day
    After the war the British goverment asked for taxes from the colonists to pay for the war. The colonists thought this was ridiculous because they didn´t have a representative in the British Goverment and they refused to pay the taxes. The 13 colonies decided to join together to fight the British.
    On 4th July, 1778, the colonists declared independence from Great Britain. Then the fighting started

    Today, the flag has got 13 stripes and 50 stars, that's because the stars represent the 50 states of America and the stripes represent the first 13 original colonies.
    In 1782, Congress selected the bald Eagle as the official emblem of th USA, because it symbolized beauty, strenght and long life.

    The Capital of the USA
    Today, Washington D.C is the capital of the USA, but before this, the capital was Philadelphia, the home of the Declaration of Independence. Philadelphia wasn´t in the centre of the country.
    So in 1791, George Washington, the first president marked 260-square-kilometre area near the Potomic River.
    Later this area became "Washington".The goverment moved there in 1800 and then people started to live there.

    The most famous symbol of USA is the Statue of Liberty, France gave it to the United States in 1886, In 1876 a French sculptor called Frédéric Auguste designed the statue to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration Independence.

    American Space Travel
    In 1958, the US government formed the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
    In 1969, Neil Amstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins started their journey to the moon on the Apollo 11. On 20th July, 1969, the entire world watched as Neil Amstrong bacame the first man to walk on the moon saying the famous words, "That´s one small step for a man one giant leap for mankind".
