  • Facial Action Coding System (FACS) and Microexpressions (1970s)Training Tool

Facial Action Coding System (FACS) and Microexpressions (1970s)Training Tool
-Originally created by Carl-Herman Hjortso a decade earlier (1970), but was further developed by Paul Ekman (1978) and later revised in 2003.
-FACS analyzed processed units of individualized facial muscle movements that a computer program could categorize.
-MicroExpressions Training Tool was later developed by Ekman to identify involuntary facial expressions (these can occur even when people try to suppress them)
Fun Fact: Paul Ekman was a scientific advisor for the movie Inside Out
  • "Clippy"

    "Clippy"
-Microsoft's Office Assistant began being implemented into Office for Windows. Office Assistant used Bayesian algorithms to make decisions based on assuming the consumer’s intent.

-Office Assistant used an animated character to help the consumer, named “Clippit,” or “Clippy.”
-Many people ended up detesting Clippy because he would pop up almost too much, causing even more frustration in the consumer.
-Microsoft then went to MIT Media Lab to create a tension-sensing mouse.
  • Artificial Neural Network (ANN)

    Artificial Neural Network (ANN)
-ANNs were first invented in the mid 1900s and died down in the 1990s; however, that was changed when Geoffrey Hinton and Ruslan Salakhutdinov presented major improvement of ANN and made it essential to AI research.
-Neural networks are built by connecting hardware/software nodes into layers that predict a solution (pattern recognition). This is the basis of algorithms.

  • Affdex (Created by Affectiva)

    Affdex (Created by Affectiva)
-Affdex was created by Affectiva. Affectiva was launched by Dr. Rosalind Picard and Dr. Rana el Kaliouby to promote affective computing to for commercial use.
-Affdex is an analytic and emotion-sensing technology based on Deep Learning that uses real-time facial expressions that can classify emotions.
    Case Study on Affdex
Something I found super interesting was this can help detect Polio and help in other areas of healthcare.
  • Pepper: "The motors are just powerful enough to move the joints but not so strong as to hurt someone through an accidental blow" (Pandey, 2018). I thought this was smart on their end because people do fear robots being able to harm people. (link below)

-A french robotics company (Aldebaran) invented Pepper, the world's first social robot, recognizing faces, speaking seventeen languages, understanding touch and speech, understanding and responding to emotions, and even has a sense of humor.
-Pepper was designed to provide companionship to senior citizens in Japan

  • Innovation in the Near Future: fast-charging and long-lasting electrical cars

Innovation in the Near Future: fast-charging and long-lasting electrical cars
As of now, with fast charging (level 3 charger), an electric car can take roughly up to an hour to charge 80% of its battery, giving the car between 150-300 miles. Since technology grows at an exponential rate based on Moore's Law, I predict that electric cars will be more mainstreamed and will have the cars be able to charge even faster and have a even longer-lasting charge.
  • Innovation in 100 years: roads will be able to charge electric vehicles while driving.

Innovation in 100 years: roads will be able to charge electric vehicles while driving.
I predict in 100 years these roads will be mainstreamed and found everywhere in populated areas; however, I do believe that rural areas will suffer. From where I live, the nearest charging port for EVs is no less than a 60-mile radius, hence why it's rare finding EVs out here. The same will also be true for these roads.
