Isma'il was trying to make Egypt more modern, like his grandpa Muhammad Ali, by building the Suez Canal. This, along with Isma'il's other projects resulted in debt and the British taking over. -

To keep from having war, the Europeans me to divide up Africa. They did not invite any African ruler and didn't divide up the country according to ethnic groups' location, thus resulting in conflict between African ethnic groups. -
Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii
After the U.S passed the McKinley Tariff Act, Hawaii's sugar wasn't the cheapest anymore, which caused economic problems. Queen Liliuokalani made herself queen and wanted more power, but the U.S wanted Hawaii to be a part of the U.S, so they overthrew her. Overall, this resulted in Hawaii being a part of the U.S. -
Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the Battle of Adwa
Menelik 2 had made the Europeans fight over Ethiopia without ever gaining Ethiopia so, Ethiopia was free. Then there was a treaty between the Italians and Ethiopians, that Menelik 2 read which saved Ethiopia from being conquered. The Italians declared war but, lost. -
Spanish-American War breaks out; Puerto Rico, Spain, and the Philippines taken from Spain
After winning the Spanish-American war, the Americans claimed they would try to prepare the Philippine people for self-rule because the Filipinos weren't happy about going from one colonizer to the other. This did not completely happen though because, the Americans made cash crop farms. -
Boer War in South Africa
Outsiders tried to rebell against the Boers for hogging the rights diamonds and gold of South Africa, they lost. The Boers then took their rage out on the British in the Boer War which they eventually lost. -
Most of Africa is under European control
Once the Europeans were finally able to penetrate africa the Europeans divided up Africa at the Berlin Conference. Only Ethiopia was able to stay free by making European powers fight against each other for control of them and by gathering weapons.
