European Trade with Africa Becomes Well Established
Africa was a desireable spot for the Europeans to colonize. They liked Europe because of its raw materials. Europe tried lots of times to try and colonize Africa, but were only successful on the borders of Africa because of the African diseases, and their inablility to navigate the rivers. The Africans knew that the Europeans were coming to claim their land, but they were able to keep them away for a while. -
East India Company Collapses due to Sepoy Rebellion; British Raj Begins
The East India Company was struggling to defend themselves agains the sepoys in the sepoy mutiny, so Britain had to come and and help. When the British were finally able to end the Sepoy Mutiny, the period in India called the Raj began. The raj was when the Brithish took contrul of India. -
Suez Canal links the Mediterranean to the Red Sea
Isma'il (Grandson of Muhammad Ali) supported the contruction of the Suez Canal to cut through the isthumus of Suez to link the seas together. The French mainly funded the project, and it was contructed by egyptians. Once it was finished in 1869, the costs overwhelmed Egypt and the British took control. -
Berlin Conference Convenes to Discuss Terms for African Colonization
The Berlin Conference was when fourteen European countries joined together in Berlin to discuss who got to claim whice area. Any European country could claim anywhere if they notified everyone else first, and if they could prove they could control the area. The problem with the conference was that they payed no attention to different cultural groups, which led to future conflicts. -
Queen Liliuokalani Takes the Throne of Hawaii
At the same time of talk about Hawaii being added to the US, Liliuokalani took the throne and increased her power through a new constitution. This constitution would also return the Hawaiian's their power. Eventually, American businessmen devised a plan to have her overthrown. -
Ethiopians beat the Italians at the Battle of Adowa
Ethiopa one of the only African countries able to remain independent thanks to their ruler Menelik II. Menelik was able to play the Italians, the French, and the British against eachother. During that time, he saved up weapons so that he was able to defend Ethiopa from the future attack. At the Battle of Adowa, the Ethiopians were able to defeat the Italians once and for all. -
Spanish-American War Breaks Out; Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines and Taken From Spain
After gaining independence from Britain, the US decided that it was time to colonize like the Europeans to make some money. In 1898, the Spanish-American War broke out and Americans won control of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippeans from Spain. -
Boer War in South Africa
When southern Africa, which belonged to Dutch farmers called Boers, became a place of interest because of the discovery of diamonds and gold there, many people came to get rich. After attmepting to keep the "outsiders" out, the Boers started a war against the British. The Boers used guerilla tactics, and the brithish but the Boer women and children in concentration camps. Eventually the British won the war. -
Most of Africa is Under European Control
At this point, the only places that remained independent of Europe were Ethiopia and Liberia. Eurpeans were able to take control of most of the coutries because of superior weaponry and they had the means to control the coutries.
