Prince Henery The Navigator
Prince Henery sent a fleet of 30 to 40 ships to the unknown part of Africa( what is now known as South Africa). He never sailed on his voyages but paid to fund for them. He was the son of the king of Portugal. His goal was to find a trade route to the Indies for spices. He also wanted to explore the west coast of Africa -

Bartolomeu Dias of Portugal
He set sail for a long journey around Africa. His ships had enough food and water to last him for an extended trip.He touched at several points along the caost of Africa. He named what we know as the tip of Africa The Cape of Storms. -

Christopher Columbus of Spain
Christpoher set sail from spain with a small fleet of 3 ships named the Pinta, Nina, and the Santa Maria. On these 3 small ships the had only 90 men total. His crew wanted him to turn back, but he refused. Then they thretened mutiny o him, so he said that he would turn back if there was no sight of land in 4 days. On the 2nd night they spotted land, and landed on what is now the Bahamas. -

Treaty of Tordesillas
This was between Spain and Portugal. With both agreeing to this, it cleared up confusion on newly claimed land in the new world. It was clear that after Columbus discovered the new land there would be conflict for land. Pope Alexander VI was the one to come up with the first copy, but it was re-written and the land was divided more evenly when Portugal found they had a lot less land. -

Amerigo Vespucci from Spain
Amerigo Vespuncci was a Florentine merchant and navigator who exploded Atlantic coast of South America. He was one of first who believed he had reached a new world. Amerigo was named after him in 1507. He went from supplying ships to joining the Alonso Ojeda as a navigator. -

John Cabot set sail and exploded Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. He also established claim for England in the Americas !
He was religious and married( with 3 sons). On 28 May, 1498 he set sail with 5 ships an hit a bad strom! john and the ships were never seen again. -

Vasco De Gama of Portugal
Led a fleet of 4 ships, disigned by dias, down the Tagus River from Lisbon portugal. In his expedtion he made it to Cape Verde. Had orders from the king to proclaim the christen faith and to wrest kingdoms and new states from the hands of the barbarians. After four months at sea De Gamas fleet rounded the Cape of Good Hope, Many crew men we sick, their food and water went bad. He found many trading centers and traded for goods such as he coconut. His trip back to portugal took 11 months. -

Pedro Cabral of Portugal
He set out to find Brazil in 1500. His founder was King Manuel of Portugal. He also sailed east to India after he descovered Brazil. His fleet of 13 ships left the dock on March 9, 1500. He listed in his journal that he discovered Brazil on April 22, 1500. -

Hernan Cortes of Spain
His bigest claim to fame is taking over the axtech empire in Mexico. When he was a young man he studied law, but he gave that up when he wanted to be wealthy in the new world that Columbus had just discovered. The 1st place he went was to what we now know as the Dominican Republic. He became a mayor in Cuba and satyed there until 1518. -

Ponce De Leon of Spain
Ponce De Loen was on the 2dn voyage with Christopher Columbus. After that voyage he was granted the right to search for the fountian of youth on an island in the Bahamas. He was going to drink out of it to have the right to have ever lasting youth. They were forced to turn back after exploring Florida becauase he found nothing more. -

Vasco Nunez de Balboa of Spain
He was the 1st European to sail and stand in the waters of the east shore of the Pacific Ocean. Traveld throught the jungles of what we now know as Panama. Although he was the 1st to be there he did not name the Ocean. Magellen named it pacifica because the waters were calm and that word means calm. -

He set sail from spain with a fleet of 5 ships with 256 men aboard. The flolwing year he saild through the stormy stright at the tip of South America. He offered to find a trade route to the indies for Spain. The person that sent him wanted Spain to be as wealthy as Portugal, -

Giovanni worked for France and discovered New York harbor. He was an explorer and navigator. He was also well educated thanks to his family. Giovanni was the first european to enter New York bay. -

Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca from Spain
Alvar was a treasurer and was one of the cheif officals of the Narvaez expedition. After a few months after landing near tampa Bay, he was 1 of 4 who were still alive out of 600 men. Since they were lost, they let the gold rumor get to them and became more lost serching for some gold. He had a very interesting time and saw a good bit of the U.S. -

Francisco Pizzaro of
In 1532 he landed in the bay of Meato. He traveled through a dessert and snow capped mountians. He captured the Atahuallpa the last of the Inca's and killed thousands of them. The affered a huge ransome for thier reliease. But Pizzaro took their treasures and strangled the leader of the Atahuallpa. -

Jacques Cartier
Jacques was the first European to explore the interior of Canada. On his third voyage, he had plans to create a new permanent settlement in 1541. But thanks to difcult winters, it only lasted 2 years. One of his goals were to find the Northwest Passage, but never did. -

Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo from Europe
Juan found Atla Califronia in 1542. Atla means higher or upper which is because it is greater north from Baja Califronia. So, he was the fist explorer to visit Califronia. Then in September 28, 1542, he and 2 ships sailed into San Diego Bay. -

Sir Francis Drake from England
Sir Francis Drake was the first English man to sail around the world. He first was in charge of pay and supplies before becoming second-in-command, and then a captain. He also kept a secert logbook (diary) that told of what he did. About 30 years after he died 2 books were written about him. -
John Davis from Enland
John was a chief navigator and explorer under Queen Elizabeth especially in Polar regions. He was a sailor as a boy, and early made several voyages with Adrian Gilbert. He shaped the "course of China" too. John also was one of the greatest of early Arctic explorers, but just missed Hudson's Bay. He was killed by Japan piarties on his last voyage. -
Henry Hudson from England
Henry was a great navigator and a sea captian. He made 4 voyages, but the biggest one was when he was chosen to lead the expadition to Asia. Another one was when he sailed to New York Bay. He was also never married.
