    Prince Henry the Navigator
    Prince Henry was the son of the king of Portugal. Prince Henry also became eager for Portuguese sailors to explor the west coast of Africa. He also hoped they would find a new route to the far east. He saw this as a way to extend Portugal's trade and power. In the early 1400's, Henry set up the first European school for navigators and Sagers, Portugal. Henry worked with others to design and build better ships. The result was the Portuguese carval. That is about Prince Henry the Navigator.

In 1497, Bartolomeu Dias readied ships for a long, hard voyage. This was the first time the ship supply had enough water and food. Strong winds blew him southward. Dias went to reach the east coast but he didnt relized his ship got blown off course. Thats about Bartolomeu Dias.

    He set sail in August of 1492, he went with three ships their names were, Nina, Pinta, and the Santa Maria, and a crew of about 90 sailors. They urged the captian to turn back, when he refused, they threatened mutiny, or an overthrow of officers. Then Columbus promised to turn around in three days if they couldn't see land. Then they spotted land the second day, In january of 1492 the Nina headed back to spain. He was called a hero when he got back to spain.

So they asked Alexander VI for help. 1493, the Pope drew a papal line of demaracation, or imaginary line from the North Pole to the South Pole, some 300 miles, or 400 km, west of the Azores Islands.

    Vasco led a convoy, or group, of four ships down the Tasgus River from Lisbon, Portugal. Dias, in fact, accompanied da Gama as far as Cape Verde. Da Gama had orders from the king to "proclaimed the Christian faith" and to "wrest kingdoms and new states from the hands of the Barbarians." Many of the crew were sick. Their water smelled, and their food was spoiling. Sailing north along the east coast of Africa toward the island of Mozambique. The island was a Muslim trading center.

He demamned and fleet of 5 ships and 256 crew members. From the strait, Magellan sailed on into the Great South Sea, then he renamed it the Pacific Ocean from the spanish word pacifico, which means peacful. That is about Ferdinand.

    Henry Hudson
    The Dutch sent Henry Hudson, an English navigator to locate the passage. He explored the Hudson River and sailed to what is today Albany, New York. In 1610 he set out to be on the second voyage. He became lost in a strong storm and was never found or seen again. Nevertheless, his first voyage gave the Dutch claim to Americas!
