Prince Henry
Known as "The Navigator," Prince Henry's first goal was to find gold for Portugal. By the 1430s they were moving southward along the west coast of Africa. There they began to trade for slaves, gold, and ivory. -

Bartolomeu Dias
Sailed around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa. Although Dias had to turn back, he had found the route to the Indian Ocean. -

Pope Alexander VI
Issued an edict in 1493 drawing an imaginary line from north to south through the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Half would go to Spain, the other Portugal. -

Vasco da Gama
Sailed eastward across the Indian Ocean. He landed in India in 1498. Several years later, da Gama made a second voyage to India. He returned to Portugal, his ships full of valuable goods. -

Hernán Cortés
With 11 ships and 600 men, he invaded Mexico, seized the Aztec ruler Moctezuma II, (also known as Montezuma) captured and destroyed the great Aztec city of Tenochtitlán. He and his men would then build Mexico City. -
