Fransisco Pizarro arrived at the Pacific coast of South America. He and the Spanish brought smallpox, killing the Inca Emperor and causing a civil war among his sons.

Jacques Cartier sets out on an expedition to discover a route to Asia. During the expedition, his exploration of the St. Lawrence river allowed France to claim the land that would later become Canada.
