In the 1850s thousands of Boers established two independent states and followed a policy of apartheid. -
War
From 1889-1902 the British and the Boers fought each other in the South African War. -
Gold
When the miners found a lot of gold many people came to get the gold. -
The Union
The British colony became the union of South Africa. -
Apartheid
Apartheid became the official policy of South Africa. -
Protests
The ANC or African National Congress became more aggressive with their protests about opposing apartheid. -
Impacts on Apartheid
Strikes had a negative impact on apartheid, and they started to change some of it's laws. -
The Economy
The United States and Great Britian agreed to impose economic sanctions against South Africa. -
Williem de Klerk
Williem de Klerk ,a white South African who opposed apartheid became the president. -
Our Rights
A new constitution gave all adults the right to vote. -
Presidents
Nelson Mandela was elected president, served one five year term, and then retired. Then, Thabo Mbeki then became president. -
