    Portuguese arrive northwest africa in 1460

    When the Portuguese arrived they captured slaves and used them to work at plantations, mostly to grow cotton and indigo. Then they would sell and trade the materials that the slaves had grown. They also began to trade slaves and sell them to different countries.

    The time period of 1808 to 1920 was important to the history of the region since all of the countries in the region was captured and governed under the French law and system for almost half of a Century.The cultural difference it made to the countries were big and things were changed.It led to some cultural differences in the Countries nowadays.One of the country was ruled under the British system.They were called Crown colonies and the French West African Federation

    For Guinea and Cote d'ivoire,1898 was a tough year because their opposition and rebellion against the French Occupation led by Samouri Toure ended in failure with Samouri Toure Captured and executed.This even led to the occupation of French making progress in those areas and captured the countries.

    In 1917 Liberia claims war on Germany and gave the allies a much needed base in west Africa. Two years later Liberia then signs as an original member of the league of Nations covenant after World War 1. Next, after 17 years the Liberian government abolishes forced labour. Then in 1948 a new era in trade relations begin between West Africa and the united states.

    In 1958-1965 the countries in the Northwest region of Africa was free and gained their independence one by one.

    In the time period of 1958-1965,the countries in the Northwest region of Africa was free and gained their independence one by one.That meant a lot to the history of the region because people got the right to govern the countries in the way they like to and they had different choices which led to some pretty serious events later on.For example in 1970,Gambia chose to be a republic country with the president elected as Jawara.
  • 1982-The Gambia and Senegal form a loose confederation called Senegambia.

    The Senegambia was a loose confederation in the 20th century. It was founded on February 1st 1982. It was almost fully surrounded by senegal. An agreement was signed promote cooperation between the two countries but on September 30th 1989 Gambia did not follow what the contract said and led to the end of the confederation.

    In 1989, the fragile Senegambia confederation collapsed due to the conflicts and the different opinions on each side.The event led to big violent conflicts and this made thousands of people flee from Gambia to avoid the fight between them
