  • Indentured Servants

    Indentured servitude is established in the settlement of the New World Colonies in Maryland, Virginia, and all of New England.
  • Stono Rebellion

    Stono rebellion happens in Stono, South Carolina and is one of the first major slave revolts in american history.
  • Cotton Gin

    Cotton Gin is created which causes a greater need in southern america for cotton picking and the domestic slave trade is increased exponentially and utilized far greater.
  • Importation of Slaves

    Congress places a ban on the importation of slaves into the US, while domestic trade is still rather high.
  • Liberator

    Anti-slavery articles such as the liberator by William Lloyd Garrison become popular and are keys to the uprising of the abolitionist movement
  • Underground Railroad

    The underground Railroad is established which leads to the “freedom” of over 100,000 slaves over its entirety
  • North Star

    Frederick Douglass releases the North Star newspaper which explains horrors and awful details about the conditions of slavery and what african americans were suffering through.
  • Harriet Tubman

    Harriet Tubman escapes from slavery and becomes a key role in the production of the Underground railroad which leads to the freedom of countless other previous slaves.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    Congress passes a fugitive slave law which will persecute escaping african americans if they flee from slavery. It is a very prejudice filled act and shows the actions taken against african americans at this time period.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott v. Sanford case- this supreme court case establishes that slaves are indeed property of their owners and are not granted rights of citizenship. Also congress can not ban slavery in any states.
  • Abraham Lincoln

    Abolitionist supporter Abraham Lincoln is elected into presidency which is at the dismay of many southerners who support slavery.
  • Civil War

    The secession of southern states occurs due to the issue of slavery between the northern Union and the southern confederate states. This also marks the beginning of the american civil war
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation proclamation is put into action. This law states that all slaves in rebellious territories are free and will be granted rights and are no longer considered property of their owner.
  • 54th Regiment

    Massachusetts 54th regiment is called into action. This is the first group of african americans to fight alongside with and inside of the american military and is a huge milestone for the rights of african americans.
  • 13th Amendment

    The 13th amendment is ratified by congress, this action prohibits slavery in the united states.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil rights act is passed by congress which places blacks and whites on the same level and states that they should have the same rights, although this is not widely accepted or used.
  • Black Codes

    “Black codes” are established by southern states by groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and target these african americans in a racial prejudice
  • 14th Amendment

    14th amendment is ratified which overturns the Dred V. Sanford case and grants african americans citizenship
  • 15th Amendment

    15th amendment is passed- this amendment gives african americans the right to vote, although many whites oppose this act and target blacks regardless of this act.
  • Jim Crow

    Jim Crow Laws are passed in southern states which leads to larger racial tension and prejudice towards african americans through groups such as the KKK
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy V. Ferguson supreme court case establishes that racial segregation is legal as long as their things are “separate but equal” although this never prevails as africans get stuck with much worse conditions than the whites.
  • Brown v. Board

    Brown V. board of education supreme court case overrides the previous case and states that segregation is not legal and that the two races will be assimilated into a unified culture.
  • Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks is arrested on a bus for refusing to stand up for a white man, which leads to massive outrage and firgures begin to appear such as MLK Jr.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil rights act is signed by congress which prevents racial discrimination of any kind is business, politics, or any social situation.
  • Voting Rights

    Voting Rights act is passed, which outlaws practices used by southern states to either intimidate or prevent african americans from voting.
  • MLK Killed

    Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee
  • Obama

    Barack Obama becomes the first african american president to ever win office in the united states and marks a massive turning point in african american politics
