Afghanistan's history

    Mohammad Daoud

    Mohammed Daoud overthrew the king in 1973 which happened to be his first cousin, Mohammad Zahir Shah. Mohammed Daoud was the first president of Afghanistan until he was assasinated in 1978.
  • Soviet Invasion

    Soviet Invasion
    The Afghan governament had a treaty signed saying they could call upon the Soviet forces to provide security and fight mujahideen rebels. Afghanistan was requesting large forces and the Soviets wouldn't grant their requests. As for the invasion it started on December 27, 1979. The Soviets came into the country dressed as Afghani citizens. First they killed the president, Hafizullah Amin and assaulted Tajbeg Palace. The operations was fully complete by December 28, 1979.

    Soviet occupation/ Mujahideen resistance movement

    During the Soviet's occupation of Afghanistan many anti-communist's started to fight back against the government. This was called the mujahideen resistance movement. The United States along with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, China and other countries gave support to these rebels. During the Soviet occupation their were many wars. But the Soviets finally withdrew their occupation on Febraury 15,1989.

    Najibullah

    Najibullah gained control of the country after the Soviets withdrew. He governed for 3 years but then gave the power to mujahideen. They then renamed the country Islamic Repulbic of Afghanistan instead of just Afghanistan.
  • Taliban movement

    Taliban movement
    In 1994, a group of young, Muslim students arose and were welcomed as they succeeded in creating peace to the choas of the wars. This group became known as the Taliban and ruled with very strict Islamic beliefs.

    Taliban

    Taliban ruled Afghanistan for 8 years. They kept people living in fear; taking men away from families to fight in war, not allowing women outside and took food from families. The Taliban was not against shooting someone if they would not cooperate. They had strict Islamic beliefs. They banned T.V., internet and music. They shut down schools. Only the boys were allowed to go to Islamic schools. The U.S. ended the Taliban's reign in 2004 after they Taliban allowed an attack on the U.S.
  • Al-Qaeda

    Al-Qaeda
    Under Taliban, islamic extremist group, Al-Qaeda was safe. The Taliban refused to show Al-Qaeda's wereabouts and what they were planning to do. As a result of this, the U.S. couldn't control anything they did. On September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda attacked the Twin Towers of the U.S. resulting in many deaths and a national crisis. The U.S. then put significant pressure on the Taliban to turn over Al-Qaeda and the leader, Osama Bin Laden. Finally on October 7th,2001 the U.S. bombed the Taliban.

    Taliban is no more.
    After continual bombing by the U.S. the Taliban finally gave up their control of the country. The Taliban had reigned strongly for a full 9 years before they were finally put in their place.
