A new format for video, DVDs became the standard for large companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and IBM. DVDs had the best storage capabilities and better video and sound quality, making them popular quickly. The format was released in the United States in 1997 and was designed by Sony, Panasonic, Philips, and Toshiba. DVDs where popular for several decades before streaming took over.
