Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 prohibited colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains because of difficulties with Indians in this area, and unwilling to have settlers fill lands where English rule could not yet be enforced. Colonist who had already settled in this area were forced to settle somewhere else. This caused lots of angry within the colonist because they were not able to settle where they desired to, so they began to protest. -
Sugar Act
The Sugar Act was a tax on sugar and also reduced the tax on molasses, in attempts to discourage smuggling. It was the first tax enacted by the British against the colonists for the purpose of raising revenue. In response to the Sugar Act, colonists formed a boycott of luxury goods imported from Great Britain. -
Currency Act
The Currency Act did not allow the colonies to issue their own paper currency. This made the colonists extremely angry because it made paying their debts and taxes more difficult. It was one of the causes of the Revolutionary War. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was passed by Parliament because they needed money to pay the expenses of defending, protecting, and securing the British colonies and plantations in America. It was imposed on all the American colonists and required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used. It led to an uproar in the colonies an issue that was to be a major cause of the Revolution. This issue was taxation with representation. -
Quartering Act
The Quartering Act required the colonist to house British soldiers in barracks, provided by the colonies. The colonist were angry that they were being taxed to pay for provisions and barracks for the army. They also disputed on the legality of the Act because it seemed to violate the 1689 Bill of Rights. -
Declaratory Act
The Declaratory Act accompanied the repeal of the Stamp Act and stated that British Parliament's taxing authority was the same in America as in Great Britain. It was passed to state the British Parliament's authority and power to legislate the colonies. Again, the colonist were not happy with all the taxing that was going on. -
Townshend Acts
The Townshend Acts were a series of laws by the British Parliament, that taxed goods imported to the American colonies. They taxed on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea imported to the colonies. The colonists were outraged and like before began to protest and this led to the Boston Tea Party.
