    Artillery Companies
    The artillery companies are responsible for large weapons and equipment, like cannons, projectiles, and shells. At Camp Anderson in Kentucky, where Harrison is, five artillery companies were firing a cannon everyday. There are two types of artillery units, heavy artillery and light artillery.     Two Officers Dueling

    Enlisting

  • Sick During Camp

    Sick During Camp
    Harrison has been sick and not feeling well for the past few days since he's been at camp. Many soldiers in his troop are sick because they have been sleeping on wet, cold floors. Many men are not fit to fight and some are in the hospital. In the camps, sanitation lacks a lot, which causes sickness and disease.   • Life at camp

    Life at camp
    Life at camp is difficult and tiring. Harrison says in his letter, "We did not know what hard was until we come to this place." There are very few amounts of food for the soldiers and the horses. Harrison has to get up early at six o'clock to answer roll call, take care of his horse and then eat breakfast. After eating breakfast, Harrison has to do chores, and then do drill on foot and horse.

  • Disposing of the dead soldiers

    Disposing of the dead soldiers
    When Harrison's company goes to Bardstown, Kentucky, he has to bury the soldiers whom past away. The soldiers that were burried pasted away in the hospital.   • Insurrections

    Insurrections
    While heading to Bardstown, all the other regiments, except Harrison's company, rebelled not to go any further until they got paid. When they arrived at Munfordville, they received their money, but the regiments once again rebelled to not go on. The regiments wanted weapons, so the Colonel gave them guns. Finally they arrived at Nashville, Tennessee and stayed for a while because the regiments refuse to go any further without better weapons.

    Passing a Torn Up Town

  • Appointed to a Quartermaster Sergeant

    Appointed to a Quartermaster Sergeant
    On Saturday, Harrison is appointed to being the Quartermaster Sergeant. He now gets paid twenty-one dollars every month, which is more than he used to get payed. He still has to weigh the rations to the company and write a lot, but he has a lot of extra time because he gets exempt from many duties.   • Battle of Shiloh

    Battle of Shiloh
    The immense fight near Corinth was called the Battle of Shiloh. It was a massive battle because the union lost about 40,000 men and the confederate, Harrison's side, lost up to 20,000 men.   • Battle of Lebanon

    Battle of Lebanon
    Harrison's regiment had fought in the Battle of Lebanon. The Union had around 800 men, but the Confederates, Harrison's side, had only about 600 men. The Confederates killed around seventy men and won the battle. Because they did win, they took 180 weapons, 155 horses, and 200 prisoners. Harrison and a few other soldiers did not fight in this battle. Soldiers from Harrison's regiment were minorly injured.

    Battle of Richmond
    The Battle of Richmond took place in Richmond, Kentucky. From the newsapaper, Harrison heard that there was going to be a battle in Richmond. Harrison thinks the battle is going to be tedious.

  • An Attack near Murfreesboro

    An Attack near Murfreesboro
    There had been an attack near Murfreesboro. Four soldiers had been killed and two were from Harrison's regiment. This attack had started the Battle of Murfreesboro, or the Battle of Stones River.

  • Letters were Important

    Letters were Important
    Receiving and writing letters were imortant to these men. They wrote many letters to their love ones to inform them about their life during battles. Whenever his wife did not respond to his letter he wrote again saying that he was sad about not receiving any letters, but the other soldiers did.     Battle of Murfreesboro
