In 1830 Lincoln and his family moved to Illinois. He lived in Macon County and New Salem, before eventually settling in Springfield with his wife.

Lincoln was elected and served in the US House of Representatives from 1847-1849.

Lincoln's famous Lincoln-Douglas debates took place while he was running for Senate. He was not elected into Senate, but this helped to launch his presidntial campaign.

Lincoln won the 1860 election, and was inaugurated as president of the United States on March 4th, 1861.
