  • The Lost Generations 1910s - 1960s

    Aboriginal children were taken from their familes and their homes. They were taken to a church foster home, run by whites. The whites believed that they could 'breed the white out of them'.
  • Meeting of the Aboriginal People

    On Australinan Day a meeting of Aboriginal people was held in Sydney. A document called ' Aborigines Claim Citizen Rights' was circulated. This declarationg was the first time Aboriginal people had made a national protest.
  • World War II 1939-1945

  • 'Bringing Them Home'

    Because ' The Stolen Generation ' was one of Australia's worst secrets, few white people knew about it and it didn't feature in the history books until the 1980's.
  • Lost Land, Stolen Children

    The devastating impacts on Aboriginal culture were officially recognised as being wrong in 1990's. Britain claimed land in Australia, in the 18th century. To the british, no one owned the land.
  • Claiming Land Rights ( International Year Of Indigenous People )

    In 1992 the High Court agreed saying that saying TERRA NULLIUS was wrong and racist. The 1993 Native Title Act allowed Indigenous Australians to claim land rights.
  • Compensation For The Damage That Was Done

    In 1997 the Human Rights Commission's report on this horror story made a number of recommendations.
    People had recommendations on how to mend things.
    - Compensation for the people affected
    - A national ' Sorry Day' each year
    - Apologies from the government, police and churches
    etc
  • Regrets

    Federal Parliament passes a motion of ‘deep and sincere regret over the removal of Aboriginal children from their parents’. Mandatory sentencing in Western Australia and the Northern Territory becomes a national issue. Many call for these laws to be overturned because they have greater impact on Indigenous children than on non-Indigenous children.
  • The Awakening

    In May, 200 250 000 people walked across Sydney Harbour Bridge and up to 400 000 marched in Melbourne in december.
  • National Day Of Healing...

    The National Sorry Day Committee announces that in 2005, Sorry Day will be a ‘National Day of Healing for All Australians’ in an attempt to better engage the non-Indigenous Australian community with the plight of the Stolen Generations.
  • Compensation Scheme

    The first Stolen Generations compensation scheme in Australia is set up in Tasmania by the Stolen Generations of Aboriginal Children Act 2006
  • Apologies

    The federal government publically apologises to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of Australia for the forced removals of their children throughout history.
