Proclamation of 1763
The proclamation of 1763 was made by the king to keeps settlers from crossing the Appalachian Mountains. It was made after the French and Indian War. The king wanted the colonists to be on the east and the native americans to be on the west of the mountains. -
The Stamp Act
This law was for colonists to buy a stamp for every piece of paper they used. The Stamp Act angered the colonists and protests broke out. They thought taxation without representation is unfair. -
Quartering Act
The Quartering Act was a law that ordered colonists to provide housings for British troops. The New York colony asked why should they pay to keep in troops in their colony when the troops did nothing. -
The Townshend Act
The act placed a tax on certain goods the colonies imported from Britain. Soon colonists boycotted on the goods the British brought over. -
The Tea Act
The Tea Act was to rescue the British East India Company. This trading company controlled all the trade between Britain and Asia. The colonist boycott of the British tea hurt the company and in 1773 it was going to be broke unless it could sell off 17 million pounds of tea. -
The Intolerable Acts
The British Parliament published new laws for th punishment of the Boston Tea Party. The first law closed Boston Harbbor to all shipping until the ruined tea was paid for. The second law placed Massachusetts firmly under British control. -
Lexington and Concord
The first blow in Lexington was in april 1775. A spy told General Gage that colonists were hiding gunpowder and weapons in Concord. He decided to strike right away. Firing started from no where. At the end 8 colonists died, and others were wounded. -
The Second Continental Congress
On May 10, 1775 the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia. George Washington, and John Adams decided to create a continental army to fight the British. The person who would lead the army was George Washington himself. -
The Battle of Bunker Hill
On that date, 2,000 british troops formed two long lines to fire on the militamen that were on the two hills. This battle was very short but very bloody. More that 1,000 Britsh troops were killed or wounded. Both the British and Americans knew that a war has begun. -
The Olive Branch Petition
The congress sent a petition to King George to end the quarrel. By the time the petition reached King George he already called out for war. -
The Siege of Boston
To attack the British in Boston, George Washington would need heavy weaponery. So, he told Henry Know a writer to gather big guns to attack the British. Knox loaded 59 cannons. Boston was under a siege, and 9,000 British troops went back to England. -
The Declaration of Independence
One by one each delegate signed the declaration. In sigining they took a pledge to support the Independence. -
Battle of New York
After leaving Boston, Germain came up with a plan of winning the war, so General William was ordered to capture New York City. The Americans were no match for the British with their greater numbers and experienced training. The Battle of New York City was the first of many defeats for the Americans. -
Trenton
The Americans made their way towards Trenton with guns and many troops. They found the Hessians sleeping after their Christmas dinner. Completely surprised, the mercenaries surrendered. -
Saratoga
At Saratoga Springs, Burgoyne saw many militias but they attacked anyway. Surprisingly the Americans won, with an outnumbered army. -
Ratification of the Articles of Confederation
The articles of confederation was made so that there wont be one powerful govenrment that would rule over them. The articles of confederation gave the Congress several powers. It could make war and peace and raise an army or navy. Also they were allowed to print money and set up a postal system. The articles of Confederation wasnt effective to unite all the states together. -
Yorktown
Cornwallis and his army settled into Yorktown, but they didn’t know that the French had sent 5000 troops to join Washington’s army. Cornwallis saw that Yorktown was in a mess, and he finally agreed to surrender. -

Shay's Rebellion
The rebellion was led by farmers who didnt have enough money to pay their debts and taxes. The rebellion was a warning to many Americans who thought that the governement under the Articles of Confederation was not working. -
Constitutional Convention
The Constituitonal Convention met for the first time to discuss about a government. They elected George Washington to be the nation's President. The delegates feared a strong national government and believed that the nation should have a state governments. -
Ratification of the U.S. Constitution
The delegates were thinking how many states should ratify the constituion. The farmers agreed to compromise that nine out of the thirteen states should ratify. The constituiton was ratified by the delegates elected by the people in each state. Three delegates didnt sign the constiution, they doubted it. -
The Louisianna Purchase
The americans wanted to go to the Louisianna territory for farmland and to expand westward. The french also wanted to farm in the Louisianna territory, but the americans didnt want the french to farm in the same place they were going to. The french didnt want to start a new war since they were already in a war with the British. So the french made a treaty and gave the Louisianna territory to the Americans. -
Spain gives Florida to the Americans
Florida was colonized by the Spanish. They didnt want to give up Florida to the Americans, but the spanish rule was becoming weak. Then Andrew Jackson marched into Florida with troops and executed some of the lead people. The spanish didnt want to have a war so they gave Florida to the Americans in exchange for 5 million dollars and that they can have Texas. -
The Indian Removal Act
The indian removal act was passed so that the americans can expand westward. They didnt want the indians to live where the americans would expand. So the Americans then made a new territory called the Indian Territory so that all the tribes can stay. -
The Trail of Tears
The trail of tears was when all the indians where forced to leave their homes and move to the Indian Territory. They were forced out of the house without their belongings. Many natives died during this move, and others fought agianst the americans but it came to a horrible ending. -
Texas Annexed
After being independent from Mexico, many Americans wanted texas to be part of teh United States. So the Americans annexed texas and texas is the 28th state. -
Oregon Treaty
Britain conquered Oregon Country and the Americans wanted it. They didnt want to go to war so they agreed to a compromise treaty that divide Oregon in half. But the Americans still wanted all of oregon. -
War with Mexico
The americans wanted New Mexico and California. The mexicans fired at the american troops who were patrolling the border. The president thought this was a sign of war. When the american army came to conquer New Mexico, the mexican gave away. Mexico signed a treaty agreeing to give up Texas and a vast region as the Mexican cession. ( current day california, Nevada, Utah and many other states). -
California applied as a Free State
Southerners opposed admitting California as a free state because there wouldnt be a balance between free to slave states. They didnt want the northerners to be even more powerful with another free state. -
The Kansas- Nebraska Act
The northerners were unhappy about the act because Nebraska and Kansas was open to slavery. They didnt want this becuase they wanted to ban slavery. -
John Brown Attacks the Arsenal
Some northerners upset southerners after Brown's raid because they viewed Brown as a hero, rather than a lunatic. He wanted the slaves to rebel and fight the southerners for their freedom. -
Abraham Lincoln was electedd President
Southerners were unhappy with the election because they knew that he would ban slavery throughout the country. THe southerners were now thinking about separating from the Union and become their own country. -
Civil War
The Civil War started because the dissagreements between the North and South. The south wanted slavery and the North didn't. They thought that it was curel and not fair. So the Southerner states seceded and the Civil War started. After all the commossion the war ended on April 9, 1865.
