This is not the exact date in June, it is just recorded as one hot day in June. This is when Roy Allen first sold his new creamy drink at a parade honoring war veterans.
-
Allen decided his drink was such a sucess that he took up a partner, Frank Wright. In 1922 they combined their intials to name the drink A&W.
-
A&W was the first to offer the drive-in concept with tray boys for curbside service. Allen bought out Wright to pursue a franchising program, making A&W America's first franchised restaurant chain.
-
By 1933 more than 170 routlets were franchised.
-
In 1950 Roy Allen retired and sold A&W to Gene Hurtz.

In 1963 Hurtz sold A&W to the J. Hungerford Smith Company.
-
A&W is first put in cans and bottles in Arizona and California.
-
Sugar-Free A&W was first made.
-
In 1986 A&W introduced cream soda and diet creme soda.
-
A&W becomes a part of Seven-Up/Dr.Pepper Inc.
-
In 2000 Yorkshire Global Restaurants, Inc., became the parent company for A&W® and Long John Silver's®.
-
A&W has changed a lot over the years, but the root beer has the same great creamy taste.
