After the New World was discovered by Europeans, people from all over northwestern Europe sailed across the Atlantic to settle in North America. The earliest immigrants were from England, but they also came from different countries as Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Germany, Holland, and France. there were also many African slaves bought to America. -

When the gold in California got discovered in 1849, people from all over the world came to take a part in the gold rush. There were also many Chine people who moved to the west coast. They helped build the railroad across America. This railroad helped open new areas for settlement. Between 1845-1848 over one million Irish people came to settle in America. The reason they left Ireland was that the potato crops failed, and there wasn't enough food to feed everyone. -
