In chapter 1, while Salva was in school his village got attacked. He ran with many other boys into a bush. -
Uncle Jewiir finds Salva
In chapter 6, Salva has been found by his uncle, Uncle Jewiir. When he joined the group he immediately became the leader. He has a gun that he uses to get food for the group. -
Crossing the Nile River
In chapters 7 and 8, Salva and the group make boats to cross the Nile River. After hours of paddling, they arrive at a fishermen's island. They spend the night at the fishermen's island and continue with their journey of crossing the Nile River. -
Salva Abandoned
In chapter 3, Salva gets left behind because they thought he was weak and wouldn't be of help. Salva then met a nice lady who let him stay with her, she also fed him and made him feel safe. -
Salva's new friend
In chapter 5, Salva tries to find his family in the group of people, instead, he manages to find a boy about his age who becomes his new friend. -
Crossing the Gilo River
In chapter 13, Salva and his refugee camp were chased out of the camp with guns shooting them, forcing them to cross the Gilo River. The Gilo River is very dangerous because it has crocodiles and also has a strong water flow. -
A chance at a new life
In chapter 14, Salva finds out that a few boys from the orphanage could get chosen to go to new york. If they go to New York they will get a new family and home. -
Memory Moments
In chapter 15, Salva gets onto the airplane and a lady walks up to him. She asks, "what would you like to drink." and Salva remembers coke, a drink his dad brought back from the market for his family to try. -
Salva's Father
In chapter 16, Salva gets an e-mail from his cousin that Salva's father is about to undergo surgery. Salva feels excited and he starts to plan his trip to see his father. -
At last reunited
In chapter 17, Slava is reunited with his father and finds out one of his brothers died. When heading back to America he plans to start an organization to raise money for South Sudan. -
Nya starts her walk to water
In chapter 1, Nya walks to the pond she usually gets water from in the dry season. During this walk, she gets very tired and exhausted and she usually has to go twice, which takes around half the day. -
Nya’s sister, Akeer isn’t feeling well
In chapter 7, Akeer isn't feeling well. She has a very bad stomachache, diarrhea, and a fever. Her family is very worried because elderly and young children usually die from this sickness. -
Nya gets to taste the nice clean water
In chapter 18, the well is done being built and Nya gets to taste clean water for the first time. -
The visitors locate the water beneath the ground and the well has been completed
In chapter 14, Visitors the villagers hav never seen before have come to locate the water beneath the ground. Nya is very confused so she asked her father, her father says that they will build a well. Nya is even more confused because when she gets water, the water is muddy and she thinks that well won't help. -
Nya meets Salva
In chapter 18, once Nya got to celebrate the completion of the well she met the group of people who had built it for her village. She had found out that one of the builders was Dinka which was their rival. The guy then asked for her name. Nya said her name was Nya and the guy was Salva.
