How It All Started
English language all started with 3 German tribes who conquered Britain in the 5th Century. They went across the North Sea from what is now Denmark and Northern Germany. At that time, the people who lived in Britain spoke the Celtic language. One of the tribes that came from Englaland. Their language was called Englisc. The words English and England came from. -

Old English
The invading Germanic tribes spoke similar languages, which in Britain developed into what we now call Old English. Old English did not sound or look like English today. People that speak English now would have very difficult time trying to understand Old English. About half of the commonly used words in Modern English have come from Old English roots. For example, the words, be, strong and water, come from Old English. Old English was spoken until around 1100. -

Middle English
In 1066 William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy (part of modern France), came and took control of England. The new conquerors;the Normans, brought with them French, which became the language of the Royal Court, including the ruling and business classes. For a period there was a kind of class division, where the lower classes spoke English and the upper classes spoke French. In the 14th century English became the most used language in Britain again, but with many French words added. -
