    The Journey Begins
My name is Brian and I was born in Ireland. While growing up, my family worked on a potato farm. As soon as the famine hit, my family struck poverty and had no way to earn money. My family left for America in order to make money. We hoped to gain wealth and knowledge. By writing this, I can teach and tell a story of what my life was like growing up. Moving to America wasn't easy, and it was very frightening. Despite the hardships, I made it and I couldn't be more proud of myself, and my family.

    Packing Up and Shipping Out
Leaving our hometown was not easy. We had to leave everything we have ever known behind, and put what we could in a suitcase and head out. It was difficult for me, and espeacilly my parents. My two older brothers, my younger sister and I all needed to memorize questions that they would ask us in order to enter. It was challenging, and the journey over to America was long and nearve-wrecking.

    City of Hope and Dreams
America; land of the free, and home of the brave. As we aproach Ellis Island everyone on the boat rushes over to catch a glance. All the passengers stare at Lady Liberty in amazment. Some rejoice, and others prepare for what lies ahead. A couple men aborad the ship and give everyone a passerby glance and allow us to enter the Island. My family and I step onto the famously known island and we follow the crowd.

    The Make-or-Break Decision
As we walk through we are all bewildered at the many races, cultures, and ethnicitys gathered. The confusion, rushing, and chiaos is overwhelming. As we get to the baggage area we lay our bags down, everything that connects us to our past are in those bags. We are all seperated and we are put into rooms with many others. They inspect us, and we all pass. We are questioned, and finally after many hours of making our way around the island we get through. When we make it to New York, we are amazed.

New life, New Culture, New Hardship
After about a month of living here in America, we have found a place to live, a job, and a new lifestyle. My family is cramped into a tiny apartment room called a tenement. It's dirty, small, but cheap and affordable. My dad works in the construction buisness, and we are always fearful of what could happen. My brothers and I work in factories and we work long hours, in sweatshops with little pay. Mother and sister stay at home and do what they can to help out. We all pitch in and do our best.

    We Have Officialy Made It
About two years living over here in America, and we have almost got the hang of it. We learned to deal with the racism and be careful when out in the streets. Almost been killed due to the racial differences. We all work, and we are looking into renting a bigger apartment. We are officially making a good deal of money and are able to spport oursleves. America was a great chance, and we are very blessed to have gotten the chance to live here. My family and I have officialy made it.
